The True Meaning of Giving Thanks

What's not to love about Thanksgiving? It's the start of a four-day weekend. You don't have to get up too early. Sometime in the afternoon, you gather with family to share a huge, delicious meal, with guaranteed leftovers. There's football and a long nap for dad, fellowhip and fun for everyone else. Best of all, except for the food, no shopping is required to have a wonderful day. For that reason, alone, adults love Thanksgiving.

Your kids probably love it, too-a day off from school, filled with lots of treats-but they probably think of Thanksgiving like you did, when you were small; it's that holiday that falls between Halloween and Christmas. We don't wear crazy costumes for Thanksgiving, we don't receive or give gifts, as a rule. So, since kids aren't bombarded with commercials, telling them what they have to get on Thanksgiving (if they want to fit in), it can be hard for them, in our consumer-driven culture, to understand just what it's all about. After all, holidays mean presents, right?

You tell your kids about the starving Pilgrims, who were saved by the gifts of food from the local Indians, and how our country might not have developed as it did, without that act of kindness. But few of us ever mark that kindness as we down our turkey and dressing. It's odd, when you think about it. Thanksgiving is the one holiday that really is all about giving and receiving, but advertisers still haven't figured a way to stretch our credit limits to the max.

So how can you make a holiday with no presents have some real meaning for your kids? You could start with the word, itself. We often forget that Thanksgiving is a compound word-the day is meant for giving thanks. If your kids are old enough to enjoy receiving gifts and blessings, they're old enough to begin learning the concept of thanks.

Before the holiday, sit down with your children and ask them what they have in their lives that makes them happy. They may name a specific toy, or a bicycle, or a game, but chances are, when they really think about it, they'll be happy for the same things you are-family and friends, love and health and a roof over their heads. Make a list of these things with your kids-tape them on the refrigerator, or someplace where your children can be reminded of all that they have to be grateful for.

Talk to your kids about ways they can give at Thanksgiving. It's a great opportunity to teach them that giving comes in many forms. With Christmas approaching, maybe they can think about donating some of the toys they've grown tired of to charity, so that children less fortunate can have a brighter holiday. Or, if your children receive an allowance, they might want to donate a portion of it, between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

There are even volunteer activities appropriate for young children. Something as simple as a neighborhood clean-up can involve many children, with supervision. Local residents and businesses can be approached about donating toward the effort, the proceeds of which can then be sent to a charity of the childrens' choice.

Thanksgiving need not be just the holiday between Halloween and Christmas. Even to your children, it's a day that can have real meaning, and live up to its name.

Things to Do When Bonding With Your Kids

No parent would want to have their child cooped up in their home, staring at the TV all day long. However, there may be a few exceptions. On wet and cold days, a movie marathon at home may just be the best way to keep your kids safe, warm, and happy.

Make the movie marathon day for the kids a truly planned event. Go to your local video store and let each child rent a video of their choice. Make sure to set clear ground rules.

Let them know that they can pick out the movies that they want so long as they agree to watch the movies that the others pick out as well. If you don't have any yet, pick up some snacks for them.

Don't forget to set the mood. Let the kids create their own movie theater in your very own living room. Let them use whatever furniture they may please to make themselves comfortable.

As a parent, your duties include manning the concession stand. It's okay to have some snacks but don't forget to serve some filling food as well such as sandwiches or veggie sticks. These types of food are not only healthy; they won't be that hard to clean up either once the movie marathon is over.

When children watch TV for long periods of time, their energy tends to get pent up. To release some of this energy, take breaks in between movies and do some fun activities like playing games.

You can actually play any game you want; follow the leader around the house, Simon says, or even doing jumping jacks will work. Just make sure to keep things fun.

Once the rain stops, this is when you can send the kids outside to play. If you do this every so often, you'll notice that they won't ask for TV time as much anymore.

Another Great Breastfeeding-Friendly Recipe to Help Calm Your Fussy-Colicky Baby

Here's a tasty recipe that is easy to make and is simply delicious! It contains none of the foods that irritate a newborn's digestive system, so as a breastfeeding mom, you can enjoy the food now and have a calm, happy baby afterwards.

Throughout time, many breastfeeding mothers have noticed that some of the foods that they eat can cause their babies to fuss and cry a few hours later. The Calm Baby Cookbook was written to outline the foods that most commonly cause a newborn to fuss, cry or experience colic and to provide delicious breastfeeding-friendly recipes to help a new mom get started. For more information about how certain foods can irritate a baby's digestive system, please visit http://www.drmelaniebee.org.

Here is one of our favourite recipes that is a life saver for breastfeeding moms. The meat can be marinated overnight and all that's left to do is to heat and serve.

Enjoy!

Marinated Beef Wraps - excerpted from The Calm Baby Cookbook

1 lb flank steak

2 cups grapefruit juice

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

2 green onions, minced

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp sea salt

Dash black pepper

2 cups fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 small onion, minced

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 cloves garlic, roasted

2 tsp cornstarch

1/4 cup cold water

Lettuce leaves

Greek style pitas

Cut the flank steak in thin slices across the grain. Place them in a resealable freezer bag. In a large glass measuring cup, combine the grapefruit juice, olive oil, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, sea salt and pepper. Mix well, and reserve one cup of the marinade. Pour the remaining marinade into the freezer bag along with the steak strips. Continue to marinade the steak strips overnight, flipping the bag every time you go into the fridge.

Note: you may want to roast your garlic so that it is ready when you cook the meat the next day. The flavour of roasted garlic is mellow and pleasing. Most breastfeeding babies do not object to roasted garlic, but go easy at first to make sure. To roast a head of garlic, cut off the top so that the tips of the cloves are slightly exposed, wrap it in tinfoil (dull side out) and place in your oven when you are baking something else (to conserve energy). The garlic will take between 30 - 60 minutes to cook and become soft. When the garlic head is cooled, squeeze out the cooked garlic, place in an airtight container and use when cooking.

The next day, in a large frying pan, sauté the onions and mushrooms in the olive oil until golden brown. Mush up the roasted garlic with a fork and add it to the frying pan. Continue to cook for 2 more minutes, and then set aside.

Wrap up the Greek pitas in a big piece of tinfoil and place in your oven at 250° F. Drain the beef strips and cook them in the same frying pan over medium high heat until cooked through. Add the reserved marinade and bring to a boil. In a glass measuring cup, mix the cornstarch and cold water and add it to the beef mixture. Continue to cook and stir until the sauce has thickened.

Using the warmed Greek pitas, add steak strips to the middle of each, and then top with the mushrooms, onions and lettuce leaves. To help avoid a mess wrap the pitas in waxed paper before serving.

How To Choose Promotional Items For Under 10 Years Old Birthday Parties

Children love their own birthday parties most memorable parties are those which give toys, return gifts, and provide a wholesome experience for the children. Nowadays children's' birthday parties have become a convenient occasion for some companies to get mileage. Kids under the age of ten are more mature and dictate their tastes to parents. But at the same time with parental guidance, they are able to make excellent choices. In an average under-ten age group party today it is quite easy to find a multitude of creative games, food, sports and entertainment and treasure hunts to keep children and adults occupied. So what can make a child's birthday party more memorable?

One can choose innovative promotional items which will eventually become a big success. Then the same can be replicated in other birthday parties also. With customized and personalized gifts all the children can feel happy. The latest craze is tattooing names and various symbols on hands and body. Safe, non-toxic in nature they can be removed later. Not all kids celebrate their birthdays at home, some do it in special venues, restaurants and theme parks. Children of a lesser god celebrate in orphanages and gardens. One can have a kids promotional meal package, lollipops with logo wrapping, treasure chests with company logo, cups and shields with a message, straw hats, coloring books, puzzles, crayons, bouncing balloons etc.

Most kids are aware of promotional and gifts, but unaware about advertising. But with parental guidance the company can target the parents towards their products. Kids can be careless and hence all items like toys, books, pencils, crayons and clay should be of non-toxic materials. In promotional items for children safety is paramount. Parents are ready to spend money on their children. Companies distributing free gifts to kids belonging to different age groups will have parents purchase other products of the company. This can prove to be a better way of marketing and promotion than direct marketing to parents.

Today companies are spending as much money on promoting products and items for children as they do for adults. Theme parties are fun and good times to promote products and new launches in a sociable happy atmosphere. Birthday parties are a wonderful occasion to see the direct reaction and response form a large cross-section of children and adults. A promotional campaign can be monitored via such an informal gathering before a public launch.

Backyardigans - Birthday Party Ideas

Looking for ideas for that extraordinary Backyardigans birthday party? Well look no further than these great and thrilling ideas to help you on your great adventure. As the Backyardigans movie is becoming more and more popular for birthday parties, there's also a growing variety of decorations to choose from. Using Backyardigans as your theme will not only get the kids singing and laughing automatically, but it will also make available a huge variety of colors to choose from when buying your decorations.

The very first thing you will need to get started while planning that delightful Backyardigans party is the invitations. You will want your invitations to be colorful, inviting, and exciting, to ensure that the guests will feel welcome and energized about attending the party.

Next will be tableware. Before starting this step, you will need to decide what and how much you are going to be serving. Will you be doing a full meal or just cake and ice-cream? You don't want to end up with plates and spoons if you are intending to serve soup for dinner. So be sure to write a list of what you are going to need for supplies. When choosing your tableware, these are a few of the essentials you may need for a typical birthday party; plates, napkins, cups, bowls and silver wear.

Your Backyardigans party decorations should be bright and cheery. Try using the colors bright blue, bright yellow, bright orange, bright purple and bright green. You may also add many other bright colors to enhance the light and appearance of the party. Decorations on the market today may include: Birthday banners, confetti, streamers, latex and foil balloons, curling ribbon, crepe streamers, cake, decor., stickers, and much more. Finding Backyardigans decorations can be a blast with the large selections out there today.

While the party is going on you may want to be playing Backyardigans music or playing one of the Backyardigans DVD's. This can help entertain the kids and at the same time give the party the joyful and happy feeling that accompanies the Backyardigans movies. This is also a good idea for backup entertainment while children are waiting to be picked up by their parents.

No party would be complete without party favors, and because using the theme "Backyardigans" has such a large selection of favors, your only problem is going to be trying to pick between the adorable selections. This may include party hats, mini magnetic frames, masks, blowouts, stickers, treat boxes, Backyardigans stuffed animals and more!

When using this as your theme, there are also different episodes to choose from. Deciding on the right episode will entirely depend on you or the child. Maybe your child has a favorite? So whether it's The Heart of The Jungle, Riding the Range, Castaways or Surf's Up, you will have a blast planning, preparing, and decorating for this exciting event.

Baptism Cakes

When you're preparing for a Baptism party, one of the most important items to remember is the cake. Whether you choose to make the cake yourself or order it from a bakery, there are some important questions to keep in mind.

· How many people do you need to feed, and will you be serving a full meal or just dessert? If cake is one of the only food items you'll be having, you may need a larger cake to ensure every guest receives a piece.

· What flavor Baptism cake would you like? If you choose to have just one flavor, you may want to consider a marble cake, which is a blend of chocolate and yellow cake. Or a cake that is half chocolate and half yellow or white allows each person to choose which flavor they'd prefer.

· Do you want one large Baptism cake or a number of smaller ones? Having more than one cake allows for more creativity in decorations, as well as more flavor options for your guests.

· If you are going to have many children present, would you prefer to have cupcakes or individually sized desserts? These may be easier to carry around and would thus eliminate the need for plates and silverware.

· How do you want the cake decorated? It should match the colors of your party decorations. Some bakeries also allow you to put a picture in the middle of the cake. Also keep in mind whether you'd like the cake to be very formal and elegant or more festive and party-oriented.

Before you cut into the cake, be sure to take a picture of the finished product. You'll want to add this to your Baptism album and create a lasting memory!

How to Enjoy The True Spirit of Thanksgiving

Do you find yourself stressed planning your thanksgiving feast? Would you like to find out how you can enjoy a more relaxed, fun time and feel the true spirit of this yearly event? Then read on for some suggestions of how you can create a day of thanksgiving instead of stress and exhaustion.

I personally would rather be filled with joy and gratitude instead of just stuffed with food on this joyous occasion. After all, the essence of the holiday is to acknowledge and celebrate all the positive things in your life. It is a time that reminds us to be grateful and appreciate everything and everyone, including ourselves. Is that the experience you have had or are planning?

To the contrary, I was a guest at a family Thanksgiving that I felt was missing the true spirit of the holiday. Four stressed women were rushing around the kitchen preparing the many traditional courses. They were getting ready to serve enough for 20 people when only 10 were present. Can you relate to that?

After at least two days of preparation, we all finally sat down by the decorative table filled with the colorful foods. Immediately the adults and children started to stuff their plates and themselves of all that would fit on them. It seemed like a movie on fast forward. In no time, the meal was over and the cleaning process began. Some guests went straight to the television.

When everyone was ready, a violent rented movie was the entertainment for the night. I quickly retreated to the bedroom to avoid the scary music and abusive actions.

Needless to say, I left feeling a strange sensation of being physically full, but emotionally and spiritually empty. I decided at that point that I would only create or attend holistic thanksgivings.

The next year I invited people who I knew were alone and did not have a place to go on this joyous holiday. I asked the guests to bring a traditional dish so that no one, especially me, would have to slave in the kitchen for days.

Before we consumed the delicious looking food, I suggested that everyone share what they were thankful for. People expressed gratitude for their health, relationships, children, homes, abundance, and jobs. Others were grateful for their opportunities to make a difference in this world.

Of course, we blessed the food and all the people who made it possible for us to have the provisions available on the table. Finally, we began to slowly enjoy the color, taste, and texture of the different food offerings.

After dinning, we gathered in the living room to share more of our blessings and play some fun, group games. Charades is always a great choice. Hours later, we all left filled with food, and also satisfied emotionally and spiritually because we experienced the essence of Thanksgiving.

On other occasions, I invited friends over for a Day After Thanksgiving Potluck. I asked people to just bring their leftovers, and I made sure that I had a plain cake and lots of candles ready.

We all gathered in the living room where I had placed glowing candles on the coffee table next to the cake. To create a reverent mood, I turned off the ceiling lights. Then I offered everyone the opportunity to come up to the table one at a time in silence, light a candle, place it on the cake, and then share with the group what they were thankful for. The rest of us remained quiet and just listened. There was no discussion, just heartfelt sharing.

To demonstrate the gratitude ritual, I lit a candle, put it on the cake, and told them how thankful I was that everyone was here tonight to share their food, love, joy, and gratitude. I also included some personal appreciations. When the next person was ready, they quietly came up and did the same.

The room was filled with reverence, peace, love, and joy. After everyone had the opportunity to participate, we did a lot of hugging, and went into the kitchen to also enjoy the physical nurturing.

The guests took part in the cleaning up and when they all left, I felt so fulfilled. The gratitude gauge was very high. I felt satisfied that I had created exactly what I wanted, a holistic, satisfying Thanksgiving. I was fed spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. That is a delicious feeling you have to experience to know. Happy Thanksgiving!

I Am Loving It

I made a visit to New Delhi some days back and the experience I had with one of the fast food joint was remarkable and I confess that "I am loving it". I loved there management style, the way they train there staff and the values they impart to the employees and the values they deliver to the customer. Though my experiences with the capital city so far have not been great, but the service guy of McDonald made my day and save me from a lot of hassles.

I went to New Delhi to meet someone for a personal reason and after finishing off my meeting I though of having some snacks. I spotted a McDonald outlet and stepped in; after going through the menu I did not understood much of it, because I hardly have fast food. One thing that I frequently buy from McDonald is the happy meal pack for my kids. My kids love it, though its still not very clear to me that whether there interest in the burger, French fries or the toy which they get complementary with the happy meal. I though of ordering the Happy meal pack.

I was carrying two hand bags with me on my visit; clutching one in between the legs and other in the hand, I took out my wallet and handed over the money to the service guy, he gave me the receipt and started preparing the service plate, In fraction of seconds the service plate was ready; I hurried towards the nearby empty seat while leaving something crucial...probably on the payment desk. I sat there and had the meal, I liked the meal though the toy was of least interest to me. Thinking that kids will be happy to see the speaking doll I kept it in my bag. After finishing my serving I left the outlet.

After getting out of the restaurant I called up my wife, talked to the kids and made few other calls. After finishing my calls I proceeded towards a cab as I wanted to reach the airport. In the mean time I though of having a Mint and I started moving towards a shop. I slipped my hands in the back pocket of the trouser and the earth slipped away beneath my feet.

Oh....... my God. To my surprise wallet was not there......!!!!.

What happened to my wallet....??? Have I lost it somewhere.....??? Am I a victim of pick pocketing....???

My head started swindling.......

How will I reach home....???? I even do not have money to travel to airport....!!! No identity card to show while checking-in.....!!! No money at all....!!!!

How/ where will I have my lunch...????

I felt sinking in the ground, my throat dried out and..... and heart popped up to my mouth

Thousands of thoughts were flowing in my mind. I calmly thought about the last transaction that I have made; I remembered paying the service guy. I rushed inside Mc Donald with heavy feet. I spotted that gentleman who took my order, I was not able to utter words and was finding it very difficult to speak even. I asked him "Boss have you spotted a wallet here".

To my utter surprise he gave me an affirmative answer and suddenly I felt that I have conquered something, He took my detailed signature as a formality and handed over the wallet back to me. I felt relaxed like never before; I thanked him.

I though of paying some amount to the gentleman as an appreciation but a second though came to my mind that he might feel it insulting.

I thanked him again and came out of the store. We come across genuine individuals' day in and day out and the Earth is a place worth living because of people like that gentleman. "I am loving it."

Unforgettable 30th Birthday Gifts

Unless you're a child, let's face it, birthdays are never particularly welcome occasions. As they approach we feel a sense of dread at having to declare ourselves another year older, and once the day has passed, we have no choice but to get used to the fact that our youth is well on the way out.

The 30th birthday is no exception, in fact it's often considered the first in a line of scary milestones in life you'd rather not have to face. In truth it's really not so bad, if you can picture yourself at 40, looking back on it! In fact, 30 is actually an age to be rather proud of. You're still within the happy confines of youth, but hopefully, finally making your way in the world and having lots of fun along the way. It just goes to show, birthdays are just a state of mind. The important thing is that we celebrate these occasions in a big way, so that they're not the big milestones we'd rather forget, but days we'd very much like to remember.

There are lots of ways to make a 30th birthday unforgettable. It's a unique occasion, so encourage your 30 year old friend to celebrate in style. Whether they choose to have a huge party, a wild weekend away, or just a quiet meal with family and friends, you can make it special for them with 30th birthday gifts they'll love to receive.

30th birthday keepsakes to treasure

It's when those special birthdays come around that we need a gift that stands out from the rest. If your friend has a small child in their life, whether it be their own son or daughter, a Godchild or a niece or nephew that they adore, you can now have the child's fingerprint pressed into silver and made into precious jewellery. The fingerprint heart or flower pendant or cufflinks for a man, make beautiful 30th birthday gifts to keep for ever. Perhaps your 30 year old is planning an exciting future when they plan to venture forth and travel the world? A few exotic holidays are sure to be on the cards for anyone wanting to make the most of life, so why not give them something for the journey. The beautiful 'Travel notes' book is the perfect travel companion. It's just perfect for keeping mementos in the form of notes, photos and details of all the best hotels they've found along the way.

Memorable Days

Experience days make great 30th birthday gifts for anyone who is willing to try something new and exciting, and nowadays there's so much choice that deciding on the best experience is all the more exciting. Who could resist 30th birthday gifts that inspire and challenge, as well as introducing new hobbies for the future? Hobbies such as karting, horse riding and photography can all be bought and given as 30th birthday gifts. Tomorrow is only going to be another ordinary day, so why not make today an extraordinary occasion, especially as it's someone's birthday.

And who could think of a more memorable way to spend the day than by experiencing the thrill of driving a Lamborghini, or racing a Harley Davidson down the open road. Of course, the experience day you choose could also be simply a once-in-a-lifetime experience to commemorate their milestone. If they love the glamorous lifestyle, look no further than the London Hotel and Theatre break for two, for an occasion that really will be unforgettable.

Games they can play again and again

Do you remember when we didn't have to go out and spend a fortune to feel a sense of satisfaction? When we used to make our own entertainment and use our time to nurture the things that matter? They say that staying in is the new going out, so what could be better as 30th birthday gifts than games and trivia that provide fun for many occasions to come. If your birthday friend likes to entertain, they'll love the 'Dinner on the MS Titanic dinner party' game, an inspiring idea for a Titanic themed meal at the Captain's table with lots of Titanic trivia and even music from the era thrown in.

Alternatively, everyone loves a good murder mystery, and the 'Death by Chocolate' and the 'Champagne Murders' Murder mystery games have all the ingredients for a lively evening of intrigue. If they like their beer and wine, the 'SudoDrinku' game is sure to go down well, but the 'Ultimate Movie quiz' is also something that's sure to get everyone talking. With 30th birthday gifts like these, your only problem will be choosing which game will be best for playing at the birthday party!

What Does Christmas Mean To You?

The season is upon us when many people view the day we call
Christmas as a special time to celebrate the last holiday of the
current year.

Weeks leading up to this day, you will find that shoppers are
busy strolling the malls for that perfect gift for their love
ones and acquaintances. Even though they sometimes have to shove
their way through the crowds, you will still find that levels of
happiness remains high.

Families decorate their surroundings with the smell of pine,
cinnamon and a host of shining lights. Plans are being made to
travel at a distance to engage in the family celebration.

Even the usually grumpy people, now show a glimpse of unusual
kindness during this season. The normal stone face with gloomy
eyes now can be seen with a faint smile and eyes that reflect a
tiny sparkle.

Children are especially happy as they wait in anticipation and
expectation of the many surprises they will soon get to unwrap.

It's even a tradition for many to prepare a more abundant and
extraordinary meal for this day called Christmas.

But what does Christmas really mean to you? What is the
celebration really about? Is it more about an outer celebration
or an inner one?

I'm certain that each individual will have a different aspect to
the questions asked. And there are no right or wrong answers
because it all depends on where in life one is as to how they
will respond.

For me, I see Christmas far different today than I did ten years
ago, even five years ago. I admit I went the traditional route
for a long time in order to give my kids and family the special
day that was expected.

Now, years later, after my kids are grown and have left home. I
now attune to a more deeper and inner celebration. Not just on
this day but everyday is special to me.

Still, somehow Christmas remains a bit more special because it
marks the birth date of my Lord and Savior. I will continue to
look at this day as spirit filled and to be exceedingly grateful
that Christ was born. Yet, I choose to consider everyday as
spirit filled because of who created each day as well as being
the creator of you and me and all of this beautiful Universe.

This day called Christmas has taught me how much more to be
grateful and to feel gratitude for all things and all people.

Behold I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11

Wishing you all the very best of the holidays. May
it be filled with great love peace and happiness.

Agonising Over Valentine's Day? The Best 4 Gifts For Your Girl

She might pretend that she doesn't care, but it's highly likely that your girlfriend or wife is looking forward to a gift or some special attention on Valentine's Day. It's the perfect day to show her how much you care about her and make her happy. If you're struggling with ideas for the perfect gift then here are four to get you started.

1. Classic romance

The easiest gift ideas are the traditional ones. Woe her with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers and a sumptuous box of chocolates. Take her out to that expensive restaurant, or even cook her favourite meal in the comfort of your own home.

2. Gift baskets

Another great gift idea is a gift basket filled with chocolates or her favourite toiletries and perfume. Top it off with a cute cuddly toy and have it delivered to her office as a public display of affection.

3. Surprise trip

Is she a fan of the theatre or a TV show? Take her on a trip to see her favourite musical or watch a taping of that television show. You can either give her the tickets on Valentine's Day or keep it a complete surprise until you get there.

4. Something adventurous

If your girl is a fan of the outdoors why not treat her to something really unique like a weekend horse riding, or white water rafting. Think how much fun she'll have telling her friends about your adventures while they lament over their garage forecourt flowers.

Whatever you decide don't believe your girl when she tells you that Valentine's Day is just a way for retailers to make money - she probably doesn't mean it!

How to Survive the Holiday Season

Each holiday season arrives with its own joys and stresses. This year, many Americans are concerned (and rightfully so, given fears of recession and job and home losses) about how they're going to get through it (and not just because of the usual familial pathos that accompanies such festivities.)

Feeling the economic burden, most people are trying to figure out how they're going to manage travel, gifts and perhaps some very difficult conversations with children and loved ones. Now, more than ever, we need to be creative about finding holiday cheer. Instead of trying to keep it status quo, we're giving you some new ideas on how to manage the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve so that you come out on top. It all comes down to the Three Fs: finances, family and food-and if we can add a fourth-fun! Yes, you can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with a positive outlook and a little advance planning.

Finances

The one thing foremost on everyone's minds this year: How are we going to afford things this holiday season? We can't think of anything more stressful than budgeting for travel, gifts and all the unexpected expenses that crop up. That said, you can mitigate the damage by changing the way you think about giving. Try spending more time and less money on gifts this year.

1) Make gifts instead of buying gifts. D-I-Y is H-O-T! Put your creative brain to work and give a gift that really means something.

* Knit scarves, sew pillows or make an article of clothing.

* Get a journal and write out your family history, or all the things you love about someone. Fill it with words, sketches and photos.

* Framed family photos, scrapbooks, hand-painted mugs or homemade cookies are always well received.

* Go shabby chic (and eco-friendly) with flea-market finds-formality is out, frugality is in. Now more than ever, it truly is the thought that counts.

2) Recycle/reintroduce toys

There's no need to feel bad about recycling items with small children. Pick ones that have lingered at the bottom of a toy chest or under the bed. Wrapping paper goes a long way in making old new again! You can also introduce new toys throughout the year. At the next birthday, unwrap all the gifts but take a few aside to be used for the next holiday or a "just because" gift.

3) Limit your list. Let's be honest-how many people could do with a simple card? Pare down your gift list.

If you have a large family, scale back the amount of gifts or agree on doing a Secret Santa this year. It'll probably relieve the pressure for lots of people. Remember that people don't love you because of what you give. It's OK to simply acknowledge their place in your life with a note of gratitude and best wishes for the season!

4) Manage your expenses. There are three things to say no to this year: Credit cards, parties you'd rather not attend and group gifting.

* Pay for all your purchases in cash (if you plan exactly what you're going to get and adhere to your list, this should be a cinch) to avoid exorbitant interest fees. If you don't want to go to Aunt Betty's Christmas Eve Eggnog Extravaganza, politely decline.

* Avoid getting sucked in to the whole "everyone chip in $100" for the boss/office party/ building super scheme. Simply offer your regrets and say it's not in your budget, but that you'd be happy to offer a card or other smaller token instead.

* There's no shame to sticking to a budget, and there's no need to drill deeper into debt because you're being pressured.

* If you've been disappointed in the past over the commercialism that pervades the holiday season, this is the year to act against it. Have the holidays your way-without mountains of stuff and the bills that go with it!

5) Set expectations with family and friends. If you're concerned about taking all the joy out of the season, relax. It's OK to change the way you think about the holidays, as long as you bring everyone in on your thinking.

* Experts agree that younger children can become fearful and insecure if they sense their parents are in financial trouble. The bottom line for the little ones (under 12) is just to know it's all going to be OK.

* If you have older children who want to help, explain to them the situation you find yourself in and what you're doing to recover. If they want to help, suggest a way for them to pitch in, like getting a part time job or helping more around the house.

* Chances are you're not the only one feeling the financial pinch, so it shouldn't be hard to have an honest conversation with friends and older family members about what's going to be possible this year.

Family

If everyone's supposed to be brimming with cheer, why is mom crying at the stove and Uncle Pete hanging out down at the local bar? Probably because of all the baggage we carry into the holidays. This year, aim to create peace and harmony amongst loved ones.

Family is all about acceptance. Give yourself one goal-to love them as they are (yes, really!). If you must choose being right or being kind, choose kindness. If all else fails, create a sense of impenetrable harmony within. Keep your daily routines up during the busy season to give yourself stability. Ditto for exercise and rest-you'll need both to stay sane!

1) Stay home. Given the choice between flight delays, crowded highways, sleeping on a pull-out couch vs. the comforts of home, we'll take home any day! There's never been a better time to stay put for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. You can plan a family visit for sometime next spring or summer, and stay home with your friends, significant other or the kids. It'll be a low-key holiday full of your kind of fun, and best of all, it'll be (relatively) stress free.

2) Take a time out. If you are able to travel and find yourself at a sibling's throat or exhausted from all the back and forth, give yourself permission to have down time. Take a walk, take a nap, meditate or hit a yoga class (or do some poses on your own.)
It's OK to say you need to unwind and recharge. If you take a break from being so "on" 24-7, you might just make it through the holiday emotionally unscathed.

3) Let it go. Have you ever noticed that you end up having the same argument or rehashing the same old stories over and over each year? All that does is open old wounds and create tension where there needn't be any. This year, resolve to only make positive statements. If you do feel anger, frustration or negative thoughts rising, allow them to pass through without articulation. Breathe deeply, leave the room for a moment if needed. Be the peacekeeper, and get people involved in creating new memories that will make better stories for next year.

4) Go do something good. If you can't see your family this year or are just hanging with friends, get out and make yourself useful! Volunteer to help prepare and serve holiday meals, have a canned food drive or visit someone who doesn't have holiday visitors. Sharing these special days with others will make you more appreciative for the things you do have, even if it doesn't feel like you have much right now.

5) Put the smack down on sadness. For many, the holidays are just another painful reminder of what's not going right. While you can't ignore the heartache that the holidays can bring, you can do something about it. Rather than writhing your way to the new year, find ways to change positively. Invent new traditions, spend the time you might have spent on someone else on yourself (exercising, renewing an old interest), open up to being more spiritual. Replace sadness with gratitude by focusing daily on three new things to be thankful for. You don't have to push down or ignore your feelings, but you don't need to wallow in them either.

Food

A nibble here, a nosh there. Before you know it, the cupboard is empty (along with your wallet) and you're breaking out the bigger pants. It happens every year, but this one can be different. Stay healthy this holiday season by staying mindful of both what you're eating, and what you're preparing.

1) Control the menu. If everyone is coming to your place for the holidays, ask people to bring one side dish or light dessert while you prepare the main course and perhaps a salad or healthy side dish. Not only does this save money and lighten the cooking load, it allows you to serve a hearty yet healthy feast. Even if someone brings a calorie-laden dish, you'll still have plenty of options.

If you're heading to a party, make your contribution wisely-bring a platter of fresh fruit or veggies or a pumpkin pie (lower in calories than any other pie on the holiday sideboard). That way, you'll be assured of one good choice during the meal.

2) Go for a dessert plate. Just don't load it up with cakes and cookies! A smaller dessert plate will keep your portions in check.

* Get a good balance of protein and veggies, and keep refilling your water glass.

* A glass or two of wine is heart-healthy, but any more than that and you'll probably feel it in the morning.

* A cookie or sliver of pie isn't going to kill you, but remember to pace yourself-after six weeks of events, all those desserts that looked so good on the table aren't going to look as great when you can't get dressed on New Year's Eve.

3) Take your time. If you arrive fashionably late, most of the food at a party will probably be gone from the table (note that this only works for cocktail and office parties, not seated dinners). If there's still an abundance of offerings, make yourself a small plate and then find somewhere else to sit and eat it-standing and grazing at the buffet will make you eat twice as much.

Really try to savor and enjoy your treats, and stop when you're full.

4) Get a move on! Fight the urge to lie on the couch after a big dinner. Get everyone together and take a walk or get a game of football going out back. Too cold outside? A frantic game of Twister or a spirited game of Charades keeps the blood flowing. If all else fails, challenge someone to a push-up contest, or at least do the dishes and help out cleaning up. You'll burn way more calories getting dishpan hands than you will watching A Christmas Story for the 20th time!

5) Decide ahead of time what you'll have. Know what you'll eat and when. Compromise by indulging in a glass or two of wine, but skip dessert. Figure out whether you'd rather enjoy the nice dinner, or snack all day at various parties. Your body can accept compromises if you're prepared.

Finally, don't forget to have a good time! The whole point of the holidays is to celebrate traditions, spend time with loved ones and give thanks for the year past (no matter how difficult things might be or might have been.) Making a change to your seasonal routine doesn't mean giving up things-it means reprioritizing what's truly important to you. It's OK to change the way you celebrate and make new traditions! Enjoy the holidays and make the most of each day. You'll treasure each one.

Chocolate Gift Ideas For Any Occasion

It's late in the evening, dinner time has long since passed, and you want a snack. A good snack that will actually fulfill your desire to please your taste buds and put a little something into your belly. Sure, you could have some water to be 'healthy', salty chips to grease up your hands, or actually make a sandwich as a mini meal. But what would be easier and tastier than having some chocolate? Nothing.

Chocolates offer so many tastes to please almost every consumer. From dark and milk, to white and filled, there is a good variety of textures and flavors. Some options you'll see when in that sweet smelling candy aisle at the store are; caramel or cream filled, almond or peanut, and crunchy or smooth.

Chocolates can offer support to an emotional time, and it is just an all around feel good, comfort food. It is also a great gift idea. Whether bunched in a basket or shaped into a bunny, chocolate gifts offer different flavors that are usually a smaller portion to give the option to please your palette without really filling the belly or taking in a very large amount of calories.

So when that urge hits and you are craving a snack, run to the cabinet or fridge and grab a chocolate bar. Make sure to stop in that aisle when grocery shopping and keep a small stock on the sweets, and when going to a friends dinner party or at a loss as to what gift to get, remember chocolate gifts.
