Important Dog Feeding Guidelines to Remember

10 Rules for Feeding your Dog

Dog Feeding Guideline #1: FEED AT LEAST TWICE A DAY

A grown up dog needs to be fed twice a day. Puppies eat smaller portions and are fed four times a day. When your dog is suffering gastro-intestinal upsets it's better to give less food more often a day, instead of two larger meals.

Risk: Feeding a larger portion only once a day increases the risk of bloat, which is a twisting of the stomach that can be fatal. Some dog breeds are more prone to bloat then others. Small dogs generally are at low risk of developing bloat. When you have a large dog it's preferable to feed from an elevated dog bowl rather than have the bowl on the floor. This is believed to reduce chances of stomach twists.

Dog Feeding Guideline #2: FEED WITH YOUR EYES

On the dog food package you will find feeding guidelines where you can find how much to feed for a dog of a particular size, age and/or weight. This a rough guideline as the energy requirements can vary by breed and by dog (one dog is taken for a stroll down the park whereas another is exercising heavily for the upcoming agility contest). Energy requirements also vary with age, health and reproductive status. You can even take outside temperature into account when your dog spends a lot of time out in the open. To establish the exact quantity of dog food is more an art than a science really. Have you ever calculated the amounts and types of food you put in your lunchbox?

Take the general advice on the package into account and modify the amount using your own critical judgement. You are the one that actually sees your dog, so you are in the best position to fine tune the general guideline.

Feeding with your eyes means you have to look at your dog. Examine his waistline for instance. Is he too thin... feed some more than the general guideline is saying. Is he overweight... then feed less. Meanwhile, continue observing his weight and activity level. You can weigh your dog every month to see whether you are on the right track. Make adjustments to the feeding schedule when required.

When in doubt remember it's better to feed a little less than to overfeed your canine. You can remove dog food that is not eaten after 10 to 15 minutes.

Risk: Too thin or overweight dogs. When you consequently overfeed your dog as opposed to his activity level you'll end up with an obese dog making him vulnerable to weight-related disorders.

Dog Feeding Guideline #3: FEEDING TIME

Some people claim your should feed your dog at the exact same time every day. But as I've never seen any dog make a true commitment in learning to tell time, this rule is not as strict as some people think it is. Remember that wild carnivores eat at irregular intervals. When your dog is used to getting his meal every day at 1800 hours sharp, you may find yourself hurrying home just because of this rule you made up. Don't go over the edge either but allow yourself a little timeframe.

Adult dogs can benefit from one day of fasting each week. This mimics their natural eating pattern in the wild and may benefit them. Fasting is not required though and should be avoided when your pooch is young, sick or underweight.

Dog Feeding Guideline #4: FEED ROOM TEMPERATURE DOG FOOD

When you're feeding kibbles this won't be a problem. But when it comes to fish or meat you keep in the fridge you need to remind yourself to leave this for some time at room temperature. When you have frozen meat it is best to thaw this in about 3 hours at room temperature (do not use a micro wave since this may decrease the nutritional value for your dog).

Risk: Feeding cold dog food can, in sensitive dogs, result in stomach issues such as vomiting.

Dog Feeding Guideline #5: MAINTAIN HYGIENE

Provide fresh drinking water and clean the dog's bowl after dinner. Hygiene is of particular importance when you're feeding a raw meat diet. Take care when handling the meat in your kitchen and don't forget to clean the location where your dog is eating. Make sure he cannot drag the meat around the house. Your dog is better equipped to deal with raw meat, but you and your family must take precautions to prevent bacterial infections such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and E.coli.

Dog Feeding Guideline #6: FEED THE SAME DOG FOOD EVERY DAY

Though we like variation and can handle very different meals this is different for your tail-wagger. Generally, a dog cannot handle changes in food (of course there exist exceptions to every rule). When you need to change dog food you should do this gradually so the intestinal flora of your pooch doesn't get upset.

Risk: Changing dog food at once can result in stomach upsets and diarrhea.

Dog Feeding Guideline #7: PEACE AND TRANQUILLITY VERSUS DISTURBANCES

Keep your dog's bowl in the same location as always.

It is often advised not disturb him when he's eating. This is fine of course since you like your enjoy your meal in peace as well, however one of the highest incidence rates of dog bites is when a dog's food is disturbed. So when training your dog let him get used to you taking away his food bowl when he's eating, put something extra in there (or just stick your hand in it) and then give it back to him. This way he'll get used to being disturbed during meals, thereby decreasing the risk of unfortunate bite incidents in the future.

Dog Feeding Guideline #8: PROVIDE WATER

Have a bowl of water available for your dog all the time.

Dog Feeding Guideline #9: PREVENT GULPING BEHAVIOR

When your dog is a very fast eater and empties his bowl in just seconds he'll probably also ingests air with his dog food. This can result in stomach and digestive upsets. When your pooch is one of these you can prevent the gulping behavior by placing a large object in the food bowl. You can get special dog dishes that have obstructive elements to make sure your dog isn't eating too fast.

When you think your dog is gulping because of competition with other dogs, then simply provide them their meals in separate rooms.

Dog Feeding Guideline #10: DEALING WITH SPECIALS

Limit food rewards and let your dog work for that tasty treat.

Be careful with table scraps. I don't know what you're having for dinner these days, but when it's fatty or spicy then you should never give this to your dog. When you have unsalted meaty and fishy leftovers (or raw uncooked kitchen counter scraps) this usually won't be an issue. When in doubt, throw your left-overs in the garbage bag. Know that some of the foods you enjoy can be toxic to your tail-wagger (for example chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes).

Avoid cooked bones as these can splinter and harm you furry friend. The nutritional value of cooked bones is less than that of raw bones anyway.

Avoid mineral and vitamin additives as this can create imbalances. Only veterinary prescribed supplements should be given.

Top Tips For Potty Training Puppies

Let's be clear from the start. A potty is not used when potty training puppies. What we are talking about is house training your puppy so that it eliminates outdoors or in a designated indoor area rather than anywhere in the home.

Don't look on potty training puppies as the unpleasant or messy side of owning a puppy. Rather see it as the first stage of a bonding process. One that will result in a happy and healthy relationship. That is the real reward of house training a dog.

Start potty training as soon as you get your puppy home. But remember they don't yet have full control of their bladder and bowel functions.

Feeding should take place at the same times every day. Do not feed with four hours of bedtime and withdraw the water bowl two hours before bedtime. A routine is essential. That means you too have to stick to a routine by getting up and going to bed at the same time every day.

Take the puppy outside into the yard or for a walk first thing in the morning, 10 to 15 minutes after every meal or drink and last thing at night. Do not play with them until they have eliminated.

If after 10 minutes there is no action take the puppy back to its crate. Wait 10 to 15 minutes then take them out again.

Be sure to praise the puppy and reward them with a little playtime every time it does "the business".

Restrict your puppy to rooms with washable floors until he is house trained.

The McWedding

Only in Hong Kong would you find the introduction of the McWedding. It is exactly as it sounds, a wedding held at a McDonald's restaurant and apparently it is quite popular. Beginning in January, McDonald's locations in Hong Kong will be offering wedding packages complete with a wedding cake made of apple pies and Happy Meal toy favours.

The wedding package costs around £250 and includes a ceremony and reception for 100 guests. There are two stipulations to the McWedding: no alcohol and business will continue as before, so have no exclusivity. A wedding a few fast-food emerged in the United States in recent years, but this is the first time a fast food restaurant has actively offered as a venue for weddings.

Surprisingly, there is a market for McWeddings. Helen Cheung Yuen-Ling, Director of Corporate Communications at McDonald's in Hong Kong, said the South China Morning Post had flooded with calls fromfast-food fanatics who can not wait until they tie the knot at their favorite fast food restaurant. Perhaps these couples met at McDonald's or old fashioned, but suggested another reason is the lack of social mobility and income declining among young people in Hong Kong.

Perhaps these couples are to have such a thing. In a world where many couples are between paying for their wedding and a deposit of sounds to choose their first home, a £ 250 wedding for 100 people well enough. Or maybe your wedding dayshould be your dream come true....and for these couples it is both. I'm not suggesting we all go get married at our local McDonald's but maybe it's time to be a little more creative in order to keep costs from spiraling out of control. I love the challenge of saving couples money on their wedding and often you don't even have to sacrifice that much. Maybe McDonald's isn't for you, but the Chinese are lovin' it!

Can We Get A Puppy, Can We, Please?

The Basics Of Puppy Care

They are cute and cuddly and everybody loves them. Their eyes are bright and inquisitive, and their tails wag 100 miles per hour. Who doesn't want a new puppy? Getting a puppy can be a great addition to the family, but it is important to remember that they are only babies and will require a lot of puppy care. Puppies are dependent on you to feed them and teach them the things they need to know like babies. They will need lots of attention and patience.

Puppy Supplies

It is a good idea to prepare your house well before the new puppy comes home for the first time. Stock up on all the supplies your puppy will need as a new member of the family. The first items to shop for will be feeding supplies, and these include bowls for water and food, as well as a high quality dry food specially formulated for puppies. It is also a good idea to get a crate for your puppy, since most puppy care information touts the benefits of crate training dogs. You can line the bottom of your crate with an old blanket or towel that your puppy will find comfy for sleeping on.

A collar and leash are other good supplies to purchase before you bring your puppy home, as well as a few chew toys and grooming supplies like shampoo and nail clippers. To make sure that your chew toys are safe for your new pup, avoid items like rawhide that can break off and get lodged in a small dog's throat and opt instead for durable items like a Nylabone chew toy for playtime. Having some of these toys on hand will hopefully deter your dog from teething on other items like your favorite shoes or the living room chairs.

Feeding Your Puppy

Feeding your puppy is very important part of puppy care since he is developing bones and muscle as he grows. Remember that you need to feed your puppy food that is formulated for puppies and not adults. Puppies grow up rapidly and have special nutritional requirements.

Growing puppies usually should eat twice a day, but do not leave dry food out so they can snack whenever they want, or "graze." You can't depend on your puppy to quit eating when he is full. Some will, but others will eat until they get sick. It's also a good idea for his future health to let your puppy get used to regular meal times. Canned food is optional but not required for good nutrition. It is more of a special treat.

Housebreaking and the New Puppy

A very important part of puppy care is the house breaking. This requires patience, and lots of it. This will be one of the first training objectives you will have for your pup. Make sure that you have plenty of cleaning supplies on hand, since accidents will happen.

Many puppies will need to go just after they eat so this is a good time to take them out. At other times they will give you some kind of sign, sometimes they sniff around, or turn around looking for a spot. Watching for their signal can tell you when you and your pup need to hit the door running. It will take a bit of time for your pup to get the hang of this routine. Remember that dogs naturally want to go away from their home base for elimination. They will eventually get the message, but not until they have had a few accidents. The key is to not give up. Don't get mad at the puppy because he is just trying to learn what you want him to do. For best results use loving patience while he gets into the habit.

Puppies and Children

Puppies and children are usually great together but it is never wise to leave small children and puppies together unsupervised. Sometimes a puppy is too wild for children, and sometimes the child is too exuberant for the pup. Either way someone could get hurt. Most parents want a puppy specifically as a companion for their children, so monitor puppy and child interactions and at the same time teach both the puppy and the children the limits and rules for safe, fun play.

Taking Your New Puppy to the Vet

One of the first things you will need to do with your new puppy is take him to the vet. It is very important that your new puppy gets all of his shots. Shots are a necessary part of puppy care, as they prevent many potentially fatal diseases. Your vet will also check for worms, and discuss the best option for flea and heart worm protection, and will advise you when to bring your new pet in to be spayed or neutered. Your vet will provide the best information on food, sleep and care for the health of your puppy.

Many veterinarians will recommend obedience classes as part of your puppy care. These courses will teach you how to train your dog to be an obedient and acceptable member of your family. You can find obedience classes through your veterinarian, breeder or local pet store. Puppies grow up to be dogs and the care and training they received as a puppy will determine the temperament they have when they are adults.

There are any number of websites that will offer the puppy care information that you will need. Other good sources for puppy care information include your veterinarian's office, the local library, or the shelter that you adopt your puppy from.
