Both older dogs and puppies can display possessive behaviour through guarding their food, or other objects in a number of ways; for example, growling, showing their teeth, and in some cases attempting to bite, or actually biting those people who go near to, or attempt to take the object the dog is guarding.
Dogs that guard their food or other objects do so for many different reasons, therefore, before you can help the dog overcome his problem, it's important to understand first, why he is behaving possessively.
Dogs are similar to humans, in that we both rely on certain things in our lives which give us pleasure. For your dog, some of these things will include, food, the comfort of a certain chair in the house, toys, his or her basket, you - the dog's owner, and so on.
Some dogs display this kind of behaviour for other reasons, for example, a dominant dog may challenge his owner over resources, he believes he has a claim to, a dog who has developed behavioural problems, due to very low confidence, or quite simply, a dog who has been allowed to develop this kind of behaviour from puppy hood, due to being teased for example, either when eating, or playing with his toys. Certain breeds if not socialised adequately can develop guarding behaviours, such as Rottweilers, for example.
If your puppy or older dog has developed a problem in this area, then calm and consistent training are called for, in order to help him. Let us look at two of the most common situations when dogs display this kind of behaviour, and how you can effectively train your dog, new behaviours.
The first thing to remember is not to react negatively in any way to your dog showing this kind of behaviour, as it is counter productive. Shouting, smacking, or trying to force your dog to surrender his food or any other object he is guarding, will just intensify his actions, try understanding his motivation for his behaviour first, then move on. Next organise a plan of how you are going to help your dog, use a formula for training, as it will help you to break things into small stages. I have outlined a simple training formula for you to follow in an earlier post, but I will use it again here, to show you can apply it to a practical situation.
If your dog is guarding his food, remember, it is you who feeds him. Take control of and manage his food in order to retrain him. To give an example, prepare a small meal of boiled rice or pasta. This bland type of meal will have a low value for your dog, so he is less likely to become possessive over it if you go near him.
Next prepare some tasty food treats your dog will like, for example, sausage, liver or cheese. Put down your dogs meal of rice, and as he sniffs around it, or begins to eat it, drop the food treats by his bowl. Be guided by your dog's response, for example, if he begins to show possessive behaviour, move away to a distance he is more comfortable with, and throw the treats from there. Decrease the distance gradually over time, but always be guided by your dog's reactions.
If your dog behaves possessively towards you when he has a toy, use the same method as above. Take a toy, one that is large enough for you to hold safely, so as you don't come too close to your dog's teeth. Give your dog the toy and as he takes it, show him the food treat and at the same time give him the command 'out' or 'leave'. When he opens his mouth, take away the toy and give him the treat. Remember, you are only going to succeed here, if you offer him a treat he likes more than his toy, so find out what treats your dog really likes. Your dog will soon realise that giving something up that he has possession of, brings an even greater reward. When he is happy to exchange a toy for a treat, practice this exercise by exchanging different toys.

Betty's Birthday at Merrick Inn with Rick--NO RECIPE--

In this video, Betty and her husband, Rick, celebrate Betty's 61st birthday at Merrick Inn in Lexington, Kentucky. Merrick Inn was originally part of a large horse farm, but it was turned into a restaurant about 30 years ago. It is a beautiful dining experience, and Rick and I always have a wonderful time there. For my birthday dinner, I ordered White Meat Fried Chicken, New Potato Casserole, Creamed Spinach, French Silk Pie, iced tea, and coffee. Rick had Fried Walleye Pike, Tomato Casserole, French Fries, Peanut Butter Pie, and a Diet Coke. Accompanying our meals were fluffy yeast rolls with butter. The food was great! Rick gave me a silver neck chain to use with one of my pendants, and I was happy to get that. As always, we had a wonderful time. At home, my family regaled me by singing "Happy Birthday" (Don't count on Carter to make a career of singing!) and presented me with gifts and birthday cake. I had a great birthday! This video is not very clear, and there is a lot of chatter in the background. I apologize for the quality of the video--but the lighting was not good for making a video. I appreciate your understanding. I will be making one of the items that Rick or I ordered during my birthday meal. I hope you will enjoy it! Betty :)

Betty's Happy Jalapeno Poppers Recipe

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make a wonderful, appealing appetizer, Jalapeno Poppers. These are hollowed out jalapeno halves, filled with a mixture of cheeses, onion, mushrooms, and bacon, and baked in the oven until delicious! Ingredients (for about 2 dozen poppers): 4 slices bacon, chopped in 1-inch squares 1/2 to 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ½ cup onion, finely chopped ½ cup mushrooms, finely chopped 8-oz. cream cheese, softened to room temperature ½ cup finely shredded Monterey jack cheese ½ cup finely shredded mozzarella cheese jalapeno peppers, washed, and cut into two halves lengthwise, with seeds and fibers removed Fry 4 slices of bacon (chopped) in a skillet over medium heat. Drain on paper toweling, and set aside. Discard bacon grease and add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet where the bacon was fried. Add ½ cup finely chopped onionand ½ cup finely chopped mushrooms to the olive oil in the skillet and saute until softened. In a medium mixing bowl, combine sauteed onion and mushroom, the crisp, fried bacon bits , 8-oz. softened cream cheese, ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, and ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Mix well. Stuff each jalapeno pepper half with a generous amount of the cheese mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Place on a serving plate, and serve immediately! McQueen and Friends as McDonald Happy Meal Collectibles

The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Animation Studios released the first product of its collaboration in 1995 with the full length animation Toy Story and by June 2006 the team up reached its seventh creation with the movie Cars. To celebrate the film's launching, the leading fast food chain, McDonald's, momentarily joined this productive partnership when it issued the collectible memorabilia of the main disney characters as its Happy Meal toys.

From June to July of the same year, plastic miniatures of Lightning McQueen, Sally Carrera, Mater, Doc Hudson and Ramone were among the 9 freebie items that kids were to choose from to go along with every Happy Meal. The 1:50 scale models are replicas of their screen counterparts, each with a hint of their respective personality traits.

The Happy Meal model for Lightning McQueen, the racetrack rookie who takes center stage in the movie, comes in two versions. Both are pullback toys and can perform wheelies but one depicts the clean and sleek McQueen, whereas the other is the unkempt form, as if having just completed the repairs on Radiator Springs' main road.

The miniatures of his friends from the formerly popular stopover to a now sleepy town also have their individual attributes. The Sally and Mater models steer left or right, while Flo, the 1950s sassy show car and Fillmore, the hippie van of the 60s, are both pullback toy cars like that of McQueen. Ramone, the body paint artist and Flo's husband, expresses his art in the movie by changing his body color daily, so the miniature version comes in three hues, namely orange, green and the original violet. Meanwhile, Luigi, a 1959 Fiat 500 who owns the town's Casa Della Tire Shop, comes with a tire crank. Lastly, Doc is a wind-up toy that knows its bounds, turning about when it reaches the table edge. This design is quite fitting for the Hudson Hornet in the film who is also the town's doctor and voice of wisdom.

Interestingly these Happy Meal toys which are created for the film's young viewership, also attracts the adult crowd. Apart from quickly running out of stock which implies the popularity in demand, these same giveaways are available at online stores for the serious collectors. Priced somewhat costly considering these are released as tokens, most are for sale with the factory packaging still intact. The rarer the item, like the dirty McQueen and Mater, the more expensive it is.

Cars is a computer graphics animation that is backed by a formidable list of voice artists, starting off with Owen Wilson as McQueen, Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Bonnie Hunt as Sally and Paul Newman as Doc. Cheech Marin, Jenifer Lewis, Tony Shaloub and George Carlin also join the list of talents to give life to Ramone, Flo, Luigi and Fillmore, respectively. Since the film is entertaining to both kids and adults, it is no wonder that the McDonald's Cars collectibles are popular to audiences of all ages.

Collecting: Hobby and Industry

Many people today might not be aware of the fact that the collectible hobby industry is currently declining in popularity.  This might be due to the fact that collectibles have taken a backseat to technology.  The younger generation of today has taken more of an interest in computers, cell phones, Playstation, Nintendo and Ipods.  The slower pace of yesteryear made collecting a fun pastime for children and their families who did not have all the advances of today to fill their time.  Families used to pass their time collecting coins and stamps.  The baby boom generation made the collectible hobby industry a popular hobby for the individual that wanted to collect any sort of memorabilia.  The collectible hobby industry was turned into a billion dollar industry.  The collecting of sports cards was a very popular hobby for the baby boom generation.  Today, people collect everything from lunch boxes, baseball cards, salt and pepper shakers, stamps, coins, to cars and antique furniture.  Any item in the world that has a demand can be considered a collectible and is open to the collectible hobby industry.  The toys given out in McDonald's happy meals are often collected.  Beanie Babies also have had their place in the hearts of collectors as well.
Today, collectors can join an actual collecting club specific to their collecting interest.  The members of these clubs represent the knowledge base for the collecting area that the group supports.  They provide a network to other collectors, and friendships that can last a lifetime.  However, these collecting clubs are seeing a decline in their membership and are also experiencing aging memberships.  Collecting clubs are trying to find new ways to reach the younger generation of collectors.  These clubs feel that they have a great service to offer the collector, but are finding that with the technology boom the collectible hobby industry is taking a backseat to other pastimes.  There are large trade shows all over the world that cater to the collectible hobby industry.  Collectors can attend these trade shows to buy collectibles of their choice, swap collectibles and/or receive specific information on collecting.   Collectors can also attend shows that are specific to their item of choice.  For example, a person who collects baseball cards can attend a baseball card show.  Someone who collects cookie jars can attend a cookie jar show.  A vast majority of these trade shows can be found through the internet or a local collectible club.
There are magazines specific to the collectible hobby industry.  Once again, a collector can find magazines specific to their collectibles.  A train collector can find magazines on trains; a coin collector can find magazines on coins; and a doll collector can find magazines on dolls.  There is no end to the amount of information available to the collector and/or his or her collectibles.  
Television has even made its way into the collectible hobby industry with shows like the Antiques Roadshow.  Individuals can take any item that is at least twenty-five years old onto the show and have its value assessed.  This show has gained real popularity over the last five years.  Even for the non-collector, this show is entertaining to watch.  It also gives the viewing public a real insight into the collectible world.  The show recently featured a gentleman that collected "pickelhaube" helmets.  These helmets, which displayed a spike on top, were introduced by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia in 1842.  Even for someone who is not part of the collectible hobby industry, this information can be very interesting and informing.
The important issue of today should be informing the younger generation of the importance of collecting.  Collecting items can turn into family treasures that are passed on from generation to generation.  The collectible hobby industry is an excellent way to pass on some history to younger generations.  The older generation has so many collectibles to pass down to their families; however, without the knowledge and appreciation of collectibles, families may find their relatives passing on these items to their friends at collecting clubs or trade shows.

Hiring A Bar Mitzvah DJ: How To Do Better Than Eenie Meenie Minie Mo

The customer is (mostly) always right.



A client's input is fabulous. DJ's love to feed off of creative parents and perform to their expectations. But, there are times when parents should defer to the better judgment of the DJ, despite how they've envisioned the tenor of the party will unfold.



There's rarely a Motzi, Candlelighting or Hora at a friends-only party. It's just a basic, fun "record hop."



However, if the Bar or Bat Mitzvah is for adults as well as friends (as most are) occasionally parents feel that "It's my son's day. Work for his friends. Don't worry about our family. They'll enjoy watching."



Hey, it's your dime and, if you insisted, your disc jockey will do it. But if this were your position, he might stress that the chance of what he perceives to be a successful function is negligible. He would hate leaving a party thinking "I told you so." (But, by then, you would know it too!) Sure, the kids would have a great time. But for the adults, it would be like going to a restaurant with bad Musak. They'll have their meal, light their candle, see what direction the party is going, kiss you good-bye and scoot out of there. Why stay if the music remains unintelligible and unfamiliar?



I'm NOT inferring that a DJ should play Sinatra for four hours. But...every kid is familiar with "I Will Survive," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "The Twist," "Shout," "Respect" and "Stayin' Alive." I recently had girls request "My Boy Lollipop," "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "Do Wah Diddy Diddy!"



These tunes were all released long before this group was BORN. (Some, before their PARENTS were born!) But they know the tunes. They love the beat, dance, sing the lyrics and don't perceive them as "old folk's songs." So although your DJ must have a comprehensive, up-to-date music library including rap, hip-hop, rock or any current music trend, don't have him spin new tunes exclusively, playing strictly to the kids. They'll usually stay until the end of the party anyway, so the final hour presents itself as a better time to have music blend or trend mostly, or totally, to current.



What if you just can't decide? Ties aren't allowed. This is better than Eenie Meenie Minie Mo:



If it comes down to it, thirteen questions to ask (and answers to expect):



1. "Is my deposit refundable?"



No--deposits reserve date and time for you and you alone. Your DJ likely had to turn away other business to protect your date. Deposit range: 20-40%



2. "Do you charge more for climbing steps?"



Hopefully, it's a moot point. Every piece of DJ equipment is HEAVY. Here's our routine: out of the house, into the van, out of the van, into the hall, out of the hall, into the van, out of the van, into the house. DJs will do everything they can to keep the weight of each case to less than 50 pounds. Many would opt for doing an hour free rather than setting up and tearing down equipment. It's no picnic. And they loathe a second story banquet hall. If there's no elevator, he's not a happy camper.



Most DJs don't charge more, but you may see a contract that adds $3 per step, since the DJ will be unable to use his rolling cart and must make multiple trips on the staircase. Ugh!



3. "Do you have a web site?"



Every day DJs open sites. But many don't have one for the same reasons they haven't produced a video: a competent single-unit operator is able to fill his calendar without one. Remember, a good web designer doesn't equal a good DJ. If he has one, of course, browse. But don't judge him by it. Don't hire him because he has a great one. Don't ignore him if he doesn't!



A company that produces generic brochures for DJs also sells a matching generic web site! So the same web site "look" belongs to many DJs territorially, with their name plugged in. You aren't inquiring out-of-state and would never know this. There's nothing wrong with it, of course. It's just that it's the brochure company's creativity. Not your DJ's.



4. "Do I need to provide a table?"



Yes, and be sure it's sturdy, not a glass top or a card table. Generally a 6' or 8' or two 5' rectangular tables suffice. Ask your DJ what his arrangement requirements are (straight, L-shaped or one in front, one in back). Your hall should supply them.



5. "Will you provide an equally high caliber replacement in the event of an emergency?"



Yes. Period. (Even if you don't book through an agency, a pro knows to network.)



6. "Will you work an outdoor affair?"



Yes, with a caveat. He must be under a cover, not only to protect against inclement weather, but also to protect against sun damage to the equipment, which could be extensive during a summer luncheon. How far is the socket? Is there rain exposure there? Will the table be level on the grass? When the sun shifts, will he be exposed under the tent?



7. "Will you work overtime if requested?"



Yes, if no other job follows. Expect a prorated fee.



8. "Do you take breaks?"



No. Unless you'd like several minutes to address your guests, during the Motzi or surrounding the Candlelighting Ceremony, music at a DJ's performance should be non-stop.



9. "Do you carry property and liability coverage?"



Yes.



10. "Can my child supply his own CD's if he wants something special played?"



It depends--remember those questionable lyrics! Some DJs say no, others don't care since they want you to be pleased. Chances are, they'll have his favorite songs in their repertoire, anyway. Some DJs utilize new formats (such as MP3) and can't play standard CD's, cassettes or vinyl on their equipment. A great DJ toy was introduced to the Mobile DJ industry a few years ago: laptop software holding thousands of songs in memory! All a DJ requires are speakers and a mic. Less for him to schlep! Find out in advance. (Be SURE he has backup in the event of a hard drive crash.)



11. "Would you allow my child to 'DJ?'"



Extroverted kids get a kick out of it. Ask the DJ if he'll teach your child how the POTS work and how to CUE a song using the headphones. Letting your child TALK UP THE POST of his favorite tune will be a highlight for him, so be sure the cameras are rolling. The DJ may chuckle and feel "cheap thrills," but kids eat this up. Don't overdo it. One song. Your child only, no friends. Otherwise the DJ will be inundated and might, rightly so, object. (NOTE: some DJs may grumble at this one, anyway.)



12. "Do you need my input?"



You bet! Your contribution is essential and ought to be welcomed. You should always have relaxed dialogs and feel at ease speaking with your DJ.



13. "If I put my backside in, then put my backside out, then put my backside in and then shake it all about, are you going to laugh at me?"



Not out loud.

A Guide To Longer Feline Life

1: Feed a raw food diet. Cats do not naturally eat cooked food.  Whatever they catch they eat raw. Raw food is higher in natural enzymes and easier for cats to digest. Cats are not big water drinkers because their bodies expect to get water from the cells of the raw food they consume. For information on raw food and healthy feeding of cats there are some great websites that have recipes that are about strictly raw food diets.
2: If you can't feed raw food, wet food is better for your cat than moist food or dry food.  Cats are not big water drinkers because their bodies expect to get water from the cells of the raw food they consume. When cats do not get sufficient water from the food they eat, they need to be encouraged to drink water. Contrary to advertising, dry cat foods do not keep cats' teeth clean. Remember when you feed cooked food (moist, canned, or dry) cats need to drink more water.
3: If you feed cooked food (wet, moist, or dry), add some enzymes to your cat's diet. Heat (cooking) destroys the enzymes in raw food. Enzymes are used by the body to properly digest food and for many other metabolic functions. As cats get older, the reserve of enzymes in their bodies runs low if they have been feed a primarily cooked food diet. Feeding enzymes restores your cat's ability to digest food and stay healthy. Powered enzymes should only be fed mixed into raw or wet food, since they can damage the lungs if inhaled. There are enzymes available that are safe to feed with dry or moist food.  They are usually mixed with other nutrients.  Ask your veterinarian or search on the internet to find these.
4: Make food available for your cat at regular mealtimes.  Do not leave food available 24/7.Cats are predators, not grazers.  Their digestive system is designed to handle infrequent large meals rather than frequent, small meals. It is stressful for a cat's digestive systems to have frequent small meals. Big cats and domestic type cats are not successful hunters every day.  It is quite normal for cats to have days when they don't eat at all.  This is not harmful to them, unless, of course, they are repeatedly unsuccessful, which can lead to starvation and death. You can prevent and even cure urinary tract problems in cats by feeding at regular mealtimes and leaving water available the rest of the time. Instead of drinking water when they are thirsty, many cats will just eat more food.  Their bodies expect to get water from the food. This can lead to urinary tract problems in cats, especially when the food they are eating is dry food. Donna Starita, a veterinarian in Washington State, insists that cats with urinary problems be put on a regime of eating only at regular mealtimes with plenty of water available in between.  She has found that this change alone can eliminate chronic urinary tract difficulties for the cats of her clients who follow this routine. Of course, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
5: Indoor cats need exercise for physical and mental good health. While you cannot "walk" your cat as you would a dog, it is still important to make sure your cat gets plenty of exercise. If your cat is overweight, the problem may be related to having food available all day and all night long.  If your cat only has to move from its bed to the food dish and then back again, your cat is not getting sufficient exercise.  Cats are naturally more active and playful when they are hungry and go into "hunter mode". Boredom is unhealthy.  An active, playful cat is a cat who is not bored.  Not sure how to entertain your cat?  The simplest and least expensive toys are often the best. Cats love the sound of tissue paper which can be laid flat on the floor and toys or wands pulled under it. Use tissue paper of a variety of colors to make balls you can throw and your cat can chase. Get new toys from time to time to keep things interesting.  Don't be disappointed if a new toy you buy isn't a big hit right away.  Sometimes it takes the cat awhile to take an interest. 

The well being of a cat consists of feeding it a raw food diet. If you do not intend to feed your feline raw food then incorporating enzymes into their food is imperative to their physical condition. Keep in mind, that all cats need physical exercise and play to continue to stay healthy. I have an experience of following the above information and the results have been a long, happy life for all my cats.
