Dog Mix - Finding the Chow For You

Dog mix, often called dog food or dog chow, is a more difficult decision than you'd initially think. There are so many brands, flavors, and types to choose from, picking a certain combination can be quite tricky. This brief article is designed to make that choice easier, by going over a few simple aspects of dog food that will help you be informed about your next purchase. We'll also cover eating habits, and how to get a fussy dog to eat.

The most important thing to consider when choosing a dog mix is the dog's age. Certain types of food are more appropriate for certain ages. Puppies tend to need protein more than anything else, so choosing a hard food that has meat such as chicken or beef is a good decision. Smaller sizes of kibbles might be more suitable, as well. Older dogs might be easier to feed with soft food, and although it is costlier, it will keep their teeth from getting damaged and won't hurt their throat or gums. Adult dogs will likely eat just about anything you throw at them, but keeping their eating habits healthy is important.

Dog mix isn't everything - you have to know how to feed it to the dog, as well. Unlike cats, who will generally save most of the food you give them for another time they're hungry, dogs will usually power through just about any meal of any quantity. To avoid overfeeding, give your dog between two and four meals a day, amounting to a total of roughly one cup for every twelve to fifteen pounds of dog. This will keep them lean, and when combined with a right amount of exercise, physically healthy.

Normally, dogs will eat just about anything. However, should you run into a fussy dog (who would have thought your puppy would be such a prima donna?), knowing what to do can be a great help. If your dog won't eat, don't panic. When you're figuring out what your dog likes, try small amounts of different kinds of food. Different flavors, different shapes and sizes of food, even mixing wet and dry dog mix can be a tremendous help. Once you've figured out what your dog likes, practice safe eating habits, and get him the right amount of exercise, your dog will be healthy, full, and (probably most importantly) happy, for a long time to come.
