To Wean From Breastfeeding - How to Make Mealtime More Manageable

If you're planning to wean from breastfeeding and you see that baby is ready, willing and able, then you need to be able to prepare yourself for the dangers up ahead. By "dangers", I mean nothing harmful. If you've watched TV where the mother is trying to feed baby, after about 5 minutes, you'll notice that the dining area already looks like a warzone.

Now breastfeeding is still highly recommended, mind you. No other food can replace breast milk as it has almost all of the essential nutrients your baby would need to help him grow stronger and to help him ward off infections and sickness. But to wean a baby from breastfeeding doesn't mean that you are neglecting baby's needs for comfort and security. Rather, you can see this as a way of teaching him how to be independent - that's provided that he let's you know that he's ready to be weaned.

Now that he's prepared for solid food, you should also arrange the things you would need. Also, know what you should watch out for during the "flying food" game and messy face:

- Have drop cloths and old newspapers at hand. A baby still has no concept of clean and dirty. A messy face just means that in playing with his food, he starts to recognize certain patterns and textures in it. This also means that your baby is developing really well, so this is no cause for alarm or upsets. Spread out old newspapers and drop cloths on the floor to prevent stains made by the "air bombs" that your baby just threw at you.

- Sit him on a high chair. Use one with a stable base, and broad enough for some leg room. Strap him in, and keep other children from playing near or climbing on the high chair, as this may not only distract the baby from the food, but also risks the chair from falling - baby with it.

- Give him a cup instead of a bottle. Offer him a cup of formula or breast milk during mealtime. This would help in weaning him from a bottle.

- Give him a spoon. While feeding, allow your baby to hold a spoon with a rubber tip. Since children are great imitators, he will eventually get the message and will try to dip the spoon in the food and put it in his mouth.

- Put food in a baby bowl. If you buy store-bought foods and opt that your baby eats out of it, try to make him eat all of it. (Of course, if he's full, he's full. Don't force him.) If there are leftovers, then it's time to throw them away because bacteria and saliva from the spoon may make the food spoil easily. To be safe (and cost-efficient), put the food on a baby bowl or dish. Offer another serving if the baby seems to want more.

- Baby doesn't want the food. Don't pressure him if he doesn't like it. Give him other food first. Wait for a couple of days or a week or two, then try that food again.

- Baby is full. When he pushes away the spoon, leans far away from you, or refuses to open her mouth, then take the hint - she's already full.

Advantages of All Natural Over Canned Dog Food

Your dog nutrition is the best way to a healthy and happy life of your dog. There are so many types of different dog foods available now so sometimes it's difficult for us to pick. They have these kinds of dog food so even I find it difficult to pick the right one, I mean is the right shape , color and taste that will suit my dog. Most of us judge the quality of dog food by is the price but how one to tell you the expense dog food doesn't always mean that it is the best.

It's very important that you know all ingredients that can be hazardous for your dog. And by telling this I want to assure you that dogs can't eat all the food we eat. And just for your knowledge such foods include : onion powder, raisons or grapes, citrus oil extracts, onions, garlic, table scraps, mushrooms and lots of stuff you don't know about yet. Some of these food ingredients are toxic and can lead to a fatal disease or even death of your pet. But the most common body reaction of your dog's body is diarrhea or vomiting. What happened to my dog is that it got poisoned by a piece of chocolate. I was surprised when wet told me that chocolate especially black chocolate could be lethal for your pet. The is present in credence in chocolate are excreted by a human organism in less than three hours, but for your pet it could take up to 20 hours to leave its body.

There are some symptoms of pet chocolate poisoning which include hyper, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive urination, seizure, coma or even death. So I want you to tell my mistake - I haven't tried the chocolate packaging and I do recommend you to do this all the time if you like feeding your pets with the actual food you eat. I personally know just some of these foods. But your don't even know how much stuff your dogs cannot eat. What you can do is to ask your vet about these products, especially about foods your dog breed can not eat.

So now about the dog food itself. You have actually three ways to go. The first one is to pick with the canned dog food. It is not that expensive and if you go for it, you'd better look for chicken, turkey or pork because these are the best ones out there they help your dogs' fur, teeth and nails to be healthy and look naturally. Also look for canned foods which are rich in vegetable protein and because it gives more energy to your pets. Also it is extremely important that you understand the difference between the dog and human diet. All-natural dog food and diet is a great way to increase your pet's health overall. People who actually tried all natural dog food for their pets , have been impressed with the results. Most of them say and says their dogs have soft coats, healthy nails and teeth as well as they are full of energy (that is basically what we want our dogs to be like).

So if some of you have not understand the idea of all natural dog food, I will break it down for you. The main idea of this diet is to feed your dogs with quality human food,(but you've got to remember about those hazardous foods your pets can suffer from) and not just leftovers. If you don't like to cook and to you cannot take care of your own meal then you'd better go for all natural canned dog food (this will be more expensive for you but less hazardous for your dog). If you have chosen the last choice then you should talk to your vet to match the best type of dog food for your pet's breed. Different breeds need different types of food, some may love eating dry and canned food bugs that others may not.

And the lost tip I can give you to make your dog healthier is to take him on a walk right after his male. This will ensure that your dog is living at healthy life so here you will be more likely to play with you more and live longer. After the walk you allow your dog to nap and bit, is the walk was to an energetic.

So as you see, you have two choices for your dogs food, the first one is less complex : you just go to the store and buy the matching product for your pet. But if neither of those foods are good for your doggy, you can sure try the all natural food diet. The last option is more complicated, but in this case you will know that your dog has a healthy meal every time and this will ensure you that your dog is completely healthy.

Tips When Planning a Happy Father's Day on a Budget

In today's economy, families have to make every dollar count and sometimes that includes cutting back on gifts. However, wonderful gifts for Fathers Day don't have to cost much. With a little thought and creativity, you can make dad's day special without breaking your bank account. In this article, we'll show you how to have a Happy Fathers Day on a budget.

Never underestimate how wonderful a homemade gift can be. It says that you care enough to give of yourself. To make this a Happy Fathers Day, give your special dad a stack of homemade coupons. He can redeem them for hugs, a car wash, getting his shirts ironed, taking out the trash or cleaning up the garage. This really is a gift that keeps on giving because he can use them long after Father's Day is over. Without spending money, you'll let your dad know how much you care.

Everyone knows that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, so use your dad's favorite goodies to make gifts for Fathers Day. If your dad is a pizza lover, buy the fixings for a few homemade pizzas, assemble them, and then pop them in the freezer so dad can have one whenever he likes. Fathers Day gift baskets are always a great idea, so get a large basket from the dollar store and pack it with the ingredients for his favorite meal. For example, put in a bottle of tomato sauce, pasta, grated cheese, and some wonderful fresh bread. Top it off with some homemade cookies in an attractive keepsake tin.

Hobbies are a gold mine for great gift ideas. If your dad loves the outdoors, build him a summer survival kit. Pick up an inexpensive knapsack or duffle bag and fill it with items such as sunscreen, insect repellant, a nifty hat or a pair of shades from the dollar store, a first aid kit, and a refillable water bottle. He'll love this thoughtful Fathers Day present! If your dad loves spending long days fishing, get some new gear for his tackle box.

Hooks, lures, weights and bobbers are all inexpensive and every angler needs them. For the dad who loves golfing, you can get a great Fathers Day golf present online for under twenty-five dollars. A monogram kit will give dad a classy way to mark his golf balls, and you can order a kit at Overstock for less than twenty bucks. A chipper net will allow your dad to practice his short game wherever he is. You can order one from Bass Pro Shops for about $15. Just make sure to order your gift in plenty of time for it to arrive in time for Father's Day.

Having a Happy Fathers Day doesn't mean being unhappy with your bank balance. Start shopping early and keep on eye out for bargains on your dad's favorite things. Read flyers, keep an eye on online sales, and even consider going in together as a family on one big gift instead of several small gifts. Reducing the cost doesn't mean reducing the value of how much you care about dad. Just remember that your love and time are the only gifts your father needs.

5 Tips to Joyful Living From a 7-Year-Old

Anyone who meets my 7-year-old daughter would agree that she is one happy kid. And as her daddy, I've gotten to see that her happiness doesn't come by accident. There are some natural ways of being that tend to keep her cruising along from one happy moment to the next. Here five gems of wisdom that I've learned from her:

1. Appreciate the Small Things

For her life is a literal playground. Everywhere we go she sees wonders to marvel at, toys to play with, and people to enjoy. I'll never forget an occasion when I wanted to watch basketball and I couldn't find the HD sports station. I was impatiently thumbing through channels, worried about what I was missing in the highest resolution possible, and my daughter goes dancing by wearing my over-sized shoes and a huge pair of sunglasses. Who do you think was having more fun in that moment?

2. Ask for What You Want (And Don't Be Afraid of "No")

Imagine freely asking your boss for raise. Or asking your lover for what you really want without hesitation. Imagining? Now imagine hearing no, and then going about your day without any lasting disappointment. Sound superhuman, or at least especially evolved or mature? But that is how my little girl lives her life every day. And because she isn't afraid of hearing "no," sometimes she hears "yes."

3. Have Faith

Simple, yet profound. Consider this: my daughter never worries about where her next meal is coming from. She's never concerned about what may be looming tomorrow at school. She's never anxious about if she'll have enough of anything tomorrow, or next week, or next month. She assumes, without even being aware that she's assuming, that she'll have whatever she needs. And, incredibly, she's always right.

4. Don't Worry About Disapproval

One of the defining traits of my happy kid is friendliness, particularly to other small children. So when she passes by other kids, she almost always waves and says hi. But at least 7 times out of 10, the response is a blank stare. Sometimes an admonishing parent will prompt their kid to respond in kind, but many still stay quiet. At times it has hurt me to see her friendliness go openly ignored. But her reaction? "Must be shy." And she continues happily on her way.

5. Give Thanks

What does thanking other people have to do with creating happiness for oneself? In watching my polite little girl navigate her way through life, I've seen how her saying "thank you" positively impacts how people treat her. Myself included. I'll never forget once when she was 18-months old and I was giving her a bath. I was sitting nearby, lost in thought, and she abruptly stops playing with her floating red letters and turns to me and says "Thank you so much for all your help today, Daddy." For her that was a simple thank you, but for me it was a great laugh and cherished memory. One kind word can go a long way.

With these helpful tips, may we all live the happy, joyful lives that my beloved little girl lives every day.

Dog Mix - Finding the Chow For You

Dog mix, often called dog food or dog chow, is a more difficult decision than you'd initially think. There are so many brands, flavors, and types to choose from, picking a certain combination can be quite tricky. This brief article is designed to make that choice easier, by going over a few simple aspects of dog food that will help you be informed about your next purchase. We'll also cover eating habits, and how to get a fussy dog to eat.

The most important thing to consider when choosing a dog mix is the dog's age. Certain types of food are more appropriate for certain ages. Puppies tend to need protein more than anything else, so choosing a hard food that has meat such as chicken or beef is a good decision. Smaller sizes of kibbles might be more suitable, as well. Older dogs might be easier to feed with soft food, and although it is costlier, it will keep their teeth from getting damaged and won't hurt their throat or gums. Adult dogs will likely eat just about anything you throw at them, but keeping their eating habits healthy is important.

Dog mix isn't everything - you have to know how to feed it to the dog, as well. Unlike cats, who will generally save most of the food you give them for another time they're hungry, dogs will usually power through just about any meal of any quantity. To avoid overfeeding, give your dog between two and four meals a day, amounting to a total of roughly one cup for every twelve to fifteen pounds of dog. This will keep them lean, and when combined with a right amount of exercise, physically healthy.

Normally, dogs will eat just about anything. However, should you run into a fussy dog (who would have thought your puppy would be such a prima donna?), knowing what to do can be a great help. If your dog won't eat, don't panic. When you're figuring out what your dog likes, try small amounts of different kinds of food. Different flavors, different shapes and sizes of food, even mixing wet and dry dog mix can be a tremendous help. Once you've figured out what your dog likes, practice safe eating habits, and get him the right amount of exercise, your dog will be healthy, full, and (probably most importantly) happy, for a long time to come.

3rd Month of Baby's Physical Growth

Yes, you are happy because you and your baby have made it to three months. The past two months have been both challenging and enjoyable. You have seen your baby steadily increase in weight as well as gain more control over his/her body. Well, as you would have known, there is still a lot more physical growing that your child will be doing and three of them are listed below.

Awareness of Body

If you find that your child is playing with his/her hands and feet, this is wonderful, because this is what is expected around this time. Your child has discovered these four amazing things and is fascinated by them.

Hold Things

For the past couple of months, your child would have been keeping his/her hands closed, but as the time went by, the hands begun to unfold. You would have still been able to place one of your fingers into the baby's hand or the child would have grabbed hold of your clothing during that time, but would have held them for only a very short time.

Now though, you will find him/her holding onto things a bit longer. So, in addition to your fingers, as you play with your child you can play with some safe and colorful items as well.

First Tooth

Around this time, your little one will begin to cut his/her first tooth. Wow. Therefore, if you find that he/she is a bit fusser than usual and is constantly putting his/her hand in the mouth, this may be the reason. You can also bear in mind that for many children, when their first tooth is arriving, it brings a slight fever with it.

Having Your Baby's First Birthday Party

Congratulations! Your baby is almost one year old, and it's time to have a 1st birthday party. If this is your first baby, you might like some good first birthday ideas. And even if this is not your first child, you may still appreciate some good first birthday party ideas for making it a warm and loving family occasion.

Who is the First Birthday Party For?

One of the most important things to remember is who this birthday party is really for. At the ripe old age of one, your little one is hardly likely to remember anything about it, except for the birthday cards and pictures that will remain in the scrapbook or photo album afterwards. A one-year-old baby will also not appreciate all the pretty birthday decorations in the same way that you do. When you dress your little girl in her gorgeous, pink "birthday princess" outfit, bear in mind that she will probably make it absolutely filthy in seconds with bits of chocolate, ice cream, and all the other available goodies.

Therefore, renting a hall, a live band, and an elaborate catered meal would not exactly be appropriate here. You might enjoy all the pomp and circumstance, but it is hardly worth it if the hero of the occasion can't stand it and screams all the way through. If you invite dozens of workmates whom your baby has never seen before, your little one is likely to find the whole experience far too overwhelming and the party will end in tears.

The first rule, therefore, when making your baby's birthday party is to think what would make the birthday girl or boy happy. At the age of one, most babies are still leery of strangers. They also find loud noises overwhelming. Some babies at this age are still afraid of balloons, so you should try to save those until next year.

For all of these reasons, you should keep all birthday themes fairly low-key. Don't be seduced by all the colourful advertisements and promises presented by the " birthday supplies" industry. Your baby would most likely be happiest with a small party, soon after naptime, with a group of their closest friends.

Therefore, keep the birthday invitation list fairly small. If your little one already goes to playgroup, for example, or you know a group of other young mothers and their babies from your visits to the park, these would be the best people to invite, along with your close nieces and nephews, Grandma and Grandpa. These are all the people that your baby is familiar with, and their presence is guaranteed to make your little one feel happy and loved.

Your baby really doesn't want loads of loud birthday decorations and scary noises. By all means use colour-coordinated plates and serviettes if that makes you happy, but provide healthy finger foods and dips that babies and adults alike would enjoy eating rather than foods that your baby has either never eaten before or would not be any good for them. Banish anything like peanuts that could get stuck in small throats or cause allergies.

Dress the baby in something gorgeous for the photographs at the beginning, but make sure that it's washable and don't stress when it gets absolutely filthy!

Also remember that babies of this age tend to play next to each other, rather than together. So lay out plenty of safe toys for all the little ones to play with together on a mat. Games should be age appropriate.

Also make sure that the room is baby-proofed, with all breakables and potentially dangerous items well out of the way.

The party doesn't need to go on longer than about an hour and a half. After that, if you want, you can put your birthday boy or girl down to rest and the adult guests can have some social time together once the focus is no longer on the birthday.

Most important of all, don't stress. A 1st birthday is not a wedding. It doesn't require anything elaborate. What really counts is a happy baby and some gorgeous photos in the family album!

Seven Secrets To Choosing A Safe, Healthy Pet Food

Do you choose canned food or dry food? What brand? There are so many different brands, all shapes and sizes of pet food to choose from and pet owners are provided with very little information to base your decisions on (other than advertising) - it can get so confusing! Well, buckle your seatbelt depending on how much you know of the pet food industry, this could be a bumpy ride! You are about to learn seven secrets - well kept secrets - of pet food. Sit back, brace yourself, and keep reading.

Beneful says it's 'Premium Dog Food for a Happy, Healthy Dog' and sells for around $18.00 for a 31 lb. bag, Science Diet "promises" 'precisely balanced nutrition through continuous research and the highest quality food backed by your Vets endorsement' and sells for around $21.00 for only a 20 lb bag. Then there are numerous pet foods that make the very same statements - 'Premium Dog Food, Highest Quality' - that sell for $30.00 or more for a 20 lb bag. And the same holds true for cat owners...Do you choose Whiskas that states 'Everything we do is about making cats happy!' or do you choose one of those high end cat foods that make the very same claim of a happy, healthy cat but cost 3 times as much?

Now with the on-going pet food recall pet owners have questions such as 'Has this food been recalled?' or 'Is this food the next one to be recalled?'...'Is my pet safe?' Wow this is confusing! And scary too! What exactly is a pet owner to do? How about learning a few secrets! Equipped with the knowledge of a few secrets of pet food, it's not nearly as confusing.

Secret #1...

All pet foods use descriptive words like choice and premium, though few of them actually use premium or choice ingredients in their food. The 'secret' is that per the rules of the pet food industry, no pet food can make any claims or references on their label or advertising as to the quality or grade of ingredients. You see, the word 'premium' when it's related to pet food DOES NOT mean that the ingredients in the food are premium. With pet foods, premium does not (can not) describe the food nor does it (can it) describe the quality of the food. It is a marketing term and that is all. Per the pet food industries own rules and regulations, "There are no references to ingredient quality or grade" (regulation PF5 d 3). So, words like premium, or choice, or quality are just marketing or sales terms. They should not be interpreted as terms describing the quality of the food.

Now why wouldn't a pet food label be allowed to tell a prospective customer the quality of their ingredients? Doesn't a pet owner deserve to know what they are buying? This leads me to the next secret...

Secret#2...

If I can compare 'people' food to pet food for just a second, we all know there are different qualities of people food. There is White Castle (I'm guilty here, I love the little guys!) and there is Outback Steak House (another favorite). Both restaurants serve meat and potatoes. At White Castle for under $3.00 you can get a couple of hamburgers and an order of fries. While at Outback you can get a steak and baked potato for around $16.00. Both serve beef and potato - yet you already realize that there are huge nutritional differences between a fast food hamburger and a steak...right?

The problem in the pet food industry - is that most pet owners don't think in the same terms when it comes to pet food. They don't think in terms that there are fast food types of pet foods and there are sit down restaurant more nutritious types of pet foods. In fact, several years ago a young man tried this very experiment with his own diet - eating nothing but fast food for 30 days. In just one month of eating fast food three meals a day, he gained a great deal of weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels sky-rocketed. Now, imagine your pet eating this type of food its' entire lifetime.

OK, so back to our two meals...if a chemical analysis of your meal at White Castle was compared to a chemical analysis of your meal at Outback - both would analyze with a percentage of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Regardless whether you consider a steak at Outback a higher quality of protein than the burger - it would still analyze as protein. The analysis doesn't measure quality of protein.

So here is the secret...All pet foods come with a Guaranteed Analysis stating the percentage of protein, fat, fiber and moisture in the food. The REAL secret lies in the quality of the percentages of protein, fat, and so on.

In a chemical analysis of a pet food - chicken feet would analyze as protein, although granted it provides very little nutrition. And as well, a cow that was euthanized (put to sleep) because of a disease that made it unfit for human consumption - would analyze as protein although that could be considered dangerous for consumption. Both of those things - chicken feet and a euthanized cow - are allowable ingredients and commonly used in pet food. You see the secret within the pet food industry is manufacturers have a WIDE OPEN door to where they obtain their ingredients. The only strict rule they must follow is an adult dog food must analyze with 18% protein and an adult cat food must analyze with 26% protein. Sources to acquire those particular percentages range from a 'human grade' meat, to chicken feet, to euthanized animals, to grain proteins, to even man made chemical proteins and many variations in between.

Pet food labels do not have to tell - are not allowed to tell - the sources they use to obtain that required 18% or 26% protein. And to make matters worse...quality minded pet food manufacturers - the companies that use 100% human grade ingredients - are not allowed to tell customers or potential customers that their products are quality, human grade ingredients.

So how can you know if your pet's food uses chicken feet or euthanized cows or if it contains human grade ingredients?

Secret #3...

If the words premium and choice mean basically nothing with regards to the quality of pet food, and if some pet foods use chicken feet and euthanized animals in their food - how can a pet owner know what they are getting in their pets' food?

This big secret is found in ingredient definitions. Unlike 'people' food where you can pretty much look at the food to determine the quality, pet food is far different. All 'people' food must meet particular USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines. The same is not true for pet food. Chicken feet and euthanized cows are NOT allowed in people food for obvious reasons - they have no nutritional value or they could be dangerous to consume. The same is NOT true for pet food. The only way to know if those chicken feet or euthanized cows are in your pet's food is to know what ingredients they can be used in.

The common pet food ingredient 'Meat and Bone Meal' is basically a combination of many different discarded left-overs from the human food industry. Components of 'meat and bone meal' can be anything from cow heads, stomachs, and intestines, to (horrifying but true) euthanized animals including cows, horses and dogs and cats from veterinarian offices, animal shelters, and farms. And along with those euthanized animals the pet food also contains the drug pentabarbitol that was used to euthanize the animal. 'Meat and bone meal' can also contain left-over restaurant grease, and diseased (including cancerous) meat tissues cut away from slaughtered animals. In other words, this commonly used ingredient is a mix of highly inferior and potentially dangerous left-overs from the human food industry.

The pet food ingredient 'Meat By-Product' or 'Meat By-Product Meal' is pretty much the same thing as 'meat and bone meal'. It is a highly inferior pet food ingredient containing literally who-knows-what.

Another similar ingredient to the above is 'Animal Digest'.

As to the chicken feet I mentioned earlier - this item can be found in the ingredients 'Chicken By-Product' or 'Poultry By-Product' or 'Chicken By-Product Meal' or 'Poultry By-Product Meal'. Any left-overs in the chicken or poultry division - including but not limited to chicken feet, skin including some feathers, chicken or poultry heads, and intestines are found in these ingredients. It does NOT matter as to the health of the bird - sick, healthy, dead, dying...all is included in these ingredients.

So here is what you need to do...BEFORE you purchase any pet food, flip the bag over and closely examine the list of ingredients. The above mentioned ingredients would be listed within the first five or ten ingredients. If you see ANY of those ingredients - it is my suggestion to NOT purchase that food. Remember - chicken feet and euthanized animals do analyze as protein. That is all that is required in pet food - just the correct analysis.

Another little trick some pet food manufacturers use in this category is using grains and chemical additives to grain products to boost the protein percentages. Which is exactly the cause of the pet food recall that began in March 2007 - chemical proteins. Two different chemical additives - that have NO nutritional value to pets, but that analyzed as protein - were added to a grain product (wheat gluten, corn gluten, or rice gluten) solely to provide a cheap protein. Thousands of pets died and countless others became ill because no one counted on the problem of the combination of these two chemicals would cause kidney and urinary blockage. Again, their secret is the product has to analyze as having a particular amount of protein - no one is required to provide a quality meat protein.

While you are looking at the ingredient listing - you should also take note of how many grains (corn, wheat, rice) and/or how many grain products (corn gluten, whole corn, ground corn, whole wheat, ground wheat, wheat gluten, rice, brown rice, brewers rice, soy, and on and on) are listed within the first five or so ingredients. If you find more than one grain listed in the first five ingredients - that is telling you this pet food is acquiring some of its protein from grains.

Why is protein obtained from grains important for you to know? Several reasons - first off science proves that cats and dogs alike require and thrive on a meat protein. If a pet food is obtaining protein from grain sources, the pet is not getting the meat that it needs to thrive. Second, if the grain products are a corn gluten, wheat gluten, or rice gluten you take the risk of chemicals such as melamime added to it used strictly to boost the protein analysis. By the way, melamime is one of the chemicals found to be the cause of the March 2007 pet food recall. And there is one more concern with grains - aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a deadly mold that is common to corn, wheat, and soy and it's responsible for several other pet food recalls you probably never heard about. In December 2005, Diamond Pet Food contained moldy grains that killed over 100 pets before the product was recalled - all due to aflatoxin.

It is my recommendation to avoid any pet food that contains corn, wheat, or soy in ANY variation. The risk is simply too high.

Secret #4...

I've got more suggestions for you to look for in the ingredient listings...chemical preservatives. A very well kept secret of the pet food industry is their common use of chemical preservatives. BHA/BHT are very popular chemical preservatives used in pet food and science has linked them to tumors and cancer. Another common preservative is ethoxyquin which has known risks to cancer. Ethoxyquin is ONLY allowed in human food in some spices because of the very tiny proportions. However it is allowed in much higher proportions in pet food.

If you scan the ingredient listings, you will be looking for BHA/BHT and ethoxyquin listed anywhere. Commonly BHA/BHT is used to preserve the fat in the food which usually is found higher on the list. And also look for any of these chemicals towards the end of the ingredient listing. Personally, I wouldn't touch a pet food that contained these chemical preservatives. You want a pet food that is preserved naturally - common natural preservatives are 'natural mixed tocopherols' or 'vitamin E'.

Secret #5...

The very best food to provide to your pet is a well made food using human grade ingredients. That should be simple enough...How do you find that? You already know that pet food manufacturers are NOT allowed to make any statement as to quality or grade of ingredients, the only way you can find out the grade or quality of your pets' food is to call the manufacturer and ask them.

Now, let's say you call the ABC pet food company and ask the question "Is your Premium dog food and Premium cat food made using human grade ingredients?" It could be that you get the response yes, we use human grade ingredients - when actually only a couple of ingredients are human grade. Here's the trick to asking...ask them if they are APHIS European certified.

Pet food manufacturers that are APHIS European certified assures you that ALL ingredients in their pet food are human grade. APHIS - Animal Plant Health Inspection Services - is a division of the USDA. APHIS European certification provides this pet food manufacturer with the opportunity to ship their foods/treats to Europe. When importing pet foods from the US, European countries demand that all ingredients are human grade and thus require this certification. Most pet food manufacturers that have APHIS European certification do not ship their products to Europe - they simply use this as a means to assure their customers to the higher quality of their ingredients.

Again, you WON'T see this listed on the label - it's not allowed. You must call the manufacturer and ask. Often times the representative of the pet food won't even know what you are talking about when you ask about APHIS certification - if that's the case, you can assume they are not APHIS European certified. APHIS European certification is a bonus to pet owners - it is not required or even suggested that any pet food manufacturer go through the extra steps to obtain this. This is a special effort some pet foods go through to tell their customers they REALLY CARE about the quality of their products. Personally, I would NOT buy a pet food that doesn't have it.

And by the way, if you can't reach the pet food manufacturer, or they do not return your call within a short time frame, lose their number! Any company that does not place a priority on answering customers questions - doesn't deserve your business!

Secret #6...

Minerals are a required ingredient in human diets as well as diets for our pets. Copper, Iron and Zinc are common minerals found in pet foods. Just as they are - copper, iron, and zinc are basically rocks, very difficult for anyone or any pet to utilize. Science has developed several ways to introduce minerals into the body (human and pet) for better absorption thus benefiting the individual far more. This scientific development is called chelating or proteinating and it's been around for years. Through the chelating or proteinating process minerals are absorbed about 60% better than just the minerals alone.

This secret is spotting the minerals in your pet food to see if they are chelated or proteinated. Notice the minerals on your pet food label, way down on the list of ingredients. You are looking for minerals that read 'copper proteinate' or 'chelated copper'. If you see just the mineral listed, your pet is sort of like Charlie Brown at Halloween saying 'I got a rock'. If you want your pet to have the best, chelated or proteinated minerals are part of the best foods!

Secret #7...

This secret is called 'friendly bacteria'. Although 'friendly bacteria' sounds a little scary, the reason for it lies in your pets' intestinal system. A large portion of your pets' immune system is found within the intestinal system. Keeping the immune system healthy helps to keep the animal itself healthy. This friendly bacteria is similar to what's found in yogurt, however in pet food it is introduced in a fashion so that the cooking process doesn't destroy it. Looking at the fine print on your pet food label, this time you are looking for lengthy, scientific words like Lactobacillus Acidophilus or Bifidobacterium Thermophilum. If you do NOT see these words or some very similar, that pet food is not addressing the care of your pets' immune system. And again, if you want your pet to have the best, you want 'friendly bacteria' in their food.

There are your seven very secrets to help you find the absolute healthiest and best pet food for your four-legged friend. Armed with those secrets - you now have the knowledge to find your pet the best food possible! A pet food that can extend their life and prevent early aging and disease. If you don't want to bother doing the homework involved, I urge you to subscribe to my monthly magazine Petsumer Report(TM). Through Petsumer Report(TM) I've done all the homework for you - each month I review and rate over 40 different pet foods, treats, toys, and various other pet supplies. It's the ONLY publication of its' kind providing pet owners with the information they need to know regarding their pet product purchases.

I want to share just a couple more things...

It's best to feed an adult dog or adult cat two meals a day. The nutrition they consume with two meals is better utilized than with just one meal a day. If you are currently feeding your pet one meal a day, split that same amount into two meals and feed in the AM and PM.

You should know that all canned or moist pet foods are anywhere between 70% to 85% moisture. This means that 70% to 85% of that can or pouch of food is useless nutrition - its water. Granted our pets need water, cats especially tend not to drink enough water. But since all canned or moist foods are mostly water, they do not provide adequate nutrition to be fed strictly a canned or moist diet. Use a canned or moist product to supplement your pet's diet - not as the only food.

The best pet foods are preserved naturally (secret #4) - but there is a concern with naturally preserved pet foods...freshness. Take notice of the expiration date on your pets food label - typically with naturally preserved dry pet foods (not as much of a concern with soft foods because of canning - very little need of preservatives) the expiration date is one year to 18 months from the date it was manufactured. Let's say the pet food you are considering to purchase on July 1, 2007 has a 'Best if Used by' date of January 1, 2008. This would tell you that this particular bag of pet food is already 6 months old. While it is still 'good' a fresher food - a bag that is only 2 or 3 months old - is better. Naturally preserved pet foods lose nutritional potency with time. Always try to find a very fresh bag.

If you are considering changing your pets food, ALWAYS consult with your Veterinarian first. You should always keep your veterinarian advised of any changes you make with your pet. Don't take chances. And if you do switch pet food, make the change over very slowly. I always recommend to pet owners ¼ new food to ¾ old food for 4 to 7 days, ½ to ½ for another 4 to 7 days, and so on. Switching food quickly can cause intestinal disorder! Its short term, but we don't want intestinal disorder!!!

One last thing, as you are already aware dogs and cats have a far better sense of smell than humans. Their food bowl can be a wealth of smells - both good and bad. Some times a pet will refuse to eat simply because he or she smells a previous food in their bowl. Plastic food and water bowls retain odors the worst. And surprisingly so does stainless steel bowls. The best type of food and water bowl is a ceramic one. They retain odors the least.

"Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms." George Eliot.

I completely agree!

Keep Your Dog Happy and Healthy

Just imagine this -- eating the same food everyday, for every meal for you entire life. Imagine now, if you will - that this food is dry, has minimum variation or taste and has only the bare essentials with regards to protein, vitamins and minerals. Well... if you wouldn't wish that on yourself. Why would you consign your dog to such a fate?

The fact is that there is a healthy diet for a dog. Dogs that aren't fed well will be sluggish and age faster -- surely you would want your furry best friend to have as much vitality as possible? There are a few simple ways to ensure this.

First, make sure your pet has enough fats and oils in their food. Not only does this provide your dog with boundless energy (for a more fun playtime) but also helps increase the digestive capacity of the dog while making it less fussy. Since dogs are omnivorous (though strongly slanted to the meat eating side of it course.) it is important to give your dog animal protein, with a good rule of thumb being between 20-30% protein content per feeding. Foods such as chicken, lamb and salmon are all high in protein content (with salmon being the best because it is very oily and you are thus killing two birds with one stone). There is a misconception that raw meat is good for dogs -- this is very wrong. All meat given to your dog should be cooked to avoid your dog ingesting harmful bacteria or parasites.

Like humans, any healthy diet for a dog should preferably include calcium and phosphorus as these are vitally important to the development and upkeep of your dog's bone structure, teeth and tissue. Also, a moderate quantity of milk can be given -- but never too much. Quite apart from disturbing the balance of a healthy diet for a dog -- too much milk will cause diarrhea, so for the sake of your dog and the mess it could possibly make... remember to moderate the intake of milk.

You should also keep in mind that there are foods that are also highly dangerous for your dog that you might not have known about. So to keep their diet as healthy as possible, the following foods should be avoided at all costs when coming to your dogs: raw fish, onion and garlic, chocolate, coffee, tea, macadamia nuts and mushrooms. These are just a few of the foods that have dangerous toxins in them that can seriously harm your dog. It is also important to remember that no cooked meals or pre-made meals with onion and garlic should be given to your dog.

Giving your dog a healthy diet shouldn't be too much of a chore and if done correctly can immeasurably improve your dog's health. While it might seem that remembering these few things is impossible, over time it will become much easier. Just being aware of these small things can significantly improve your dog's health. Remember: a healthy diet for a dog is easy to keep and maintain.

Essential Baby Equipment - What You Need For a Happy Baby & Mommy

Baby Equipment can cover a vast variety of areas when it comes to looking after your baby. What is essential can also be another mind field to a new mother and we can often get lost in the look of something or the want for it, rather than actually needing it. That can lead to a lot of wasted money many people can't afford and also may result in forgetting the crucials.

In all honesty my idea of essential is completely different to most. I never had a crib or a changing station or a nursing chair. In fact my most expensive purchase was reusable diapers.

I do however consider some items essential for a baby and have a few that many people seem to never own. This is my essential list of baby equipment:

Clothing - Every baby needs clothes and lots of them! I had my fair share of second hand items from eBay and also hand me downs from when my Husband was a little boy, however I was not prepared for how messy my little boy was going to be. My son unfortunately had some acid reflux issues and for the first year of life was constantly throwing up and I had to change him every 5 minutes. Make sure that when you buy clothing you buy a lot of it. You can never have too much! Getting second hand is a great way to go and eBay is a good choice for this. eBay is also great because you can often get very cheap new items too. I bought a lot of new organic items for my son at very cheap prices.

Car seat - A car seat is another essential item. You will need it as soon as baby is born if you have a hospital birth, so this is definitely a piece of equipment you want ready!

Baby sling - I found a baby sling to one of the most essential items I could own. I have used it nearly everyday. My son was very colicky when he was a newborn and for the first 6 months or so and the only thing that really soothed him was taking him for walks in a sling or walking around the house with him in a sling. A sling is also a great way to keep your son close to you for the first 6 months of life (considered the In-Arms phase). Your baby loves being closed to you and you will not spoil him for giving him what he needs.

Muslins/Cloths - In relation to my son's acid reflux, a lot of mop cloths were needed! I was lucky to have lots of spare from buying lots for my son's diapers. Try to get a good back up stock of mops. Babies are inevitably messy little things and this will save you have to do washing everyday. Cloths are also great for mopping up once your baby is grown so don't think this is a wasteful expense - it isn't!

Nursing pads - If you intend on breastfeeding or if not, nursing pads are really quite crucial. Your breasts will leak and being very full to begin with and you will need a continuous supply of pads to help absorb it!

Breast pump - This is on the essential list because it was essential for me the first week. I managed to get Mastitis where your breasts get very full, lumpy and you feel like you have been hit by the flu. I needed a pump to help relief some of the excess milk I was producing. Despite nursing my son, I still had problems. I also found (Even though this is not recommended in the first 6 weeks) that pumping milk and putting in the fridge allowed my Husband to feed our son while I got have a nice 4 hour nap during the day. You need as much as rest as you can so every little helps!

This is my personal list of essential items. It may not be what everyone else's is but other items I had did not get used instantly or as often as the ones mentioned here. Hope it helps.

Organic Baby Mattresses - Keeping Babies Warm and the Earth Happy

In recent times, the movement to go back to all things natural and organic has been rapidly spreading. More and more people are becoming aware of the risks that synthetic and excess has been causing to the environment, and to the body's health. "Going green" is growing more and more to be the preference on everything from food, to make-up, to fashion - and now, organic can also be an option for baby furniture and materials like baby mattresses.

There is no repairing the damage that the earth has already suffered, but much can be done to prevent the environment from further deteriorating and becoming less and less conducive for human existence. This can be done by lessening the release of harmful and polluting chemicals to the atmosphere, and by minimizing waste and surplus. More and more of the excess that humans create are non-biodegradable, and would stay and pile up for hundreds of years. By that time, the environment of this planet would not be very conducive for human life. That tragedy can be prevented today by starting to care more about nature, and lessening the dependence on things synthetic and chemical-laden.

How Can a Baby Mattress be "Organic?"

Mattresses are made of cotton batting and fabric covering. Majority of the cotton now used in commercial mattresses are made from synthetic or manufactured cotton. Or if they are made from real cotton, they are usually bleached and dried out with powerful chemicals. Then, there are cotton farms that rely on using pesticides, which in turn harm the atmosphere.

An organic baby mattress will be made of natural cotton, which has been grown in farms that use only natural pesticides and fertilizers, or none at all. These organic method farms receive a certification from the United States Department of Agriculture to prove their commitment to being organic. The cotton material itself will not be bleached or treated with artificial dyes and powerful chemicals.

So What are the Advantages of Going Organic with a Baby Mattress?

Babies are the most fragile human beings on earth. They should be protected from harmful elements while their bodies are still developing and gaining immunity. Much care and attention should be given upon them since they cannot fend for themselves or express need for help yet. As much as possible, they should not be exposed to substances or conditions that are full of chemical traces. Babies can inhale or absorb these substances easily, but have practically no defense against these.

The World Health Organization, along with other scientists, attest that there is harm in consuming food or using products grown in soil that has been treated with artificial fertilizers or pesticides. These were proven to still carry traces of the toxins present in the substances used to treat the soil, which in turn are absorbed by the body when humans consume or are exposed to the product.

There is possible danger in exposing a baby to a mattress laden with artificial substances and toxins, particularly because the baby will be lying asleep upon the mattress for extended periods of time. The consequences are long term and will only surface much later in life, and by then it might be too late. Using an organic baby mattress will reduce a baby's risk and exposure to the chemicals that might harm him or her later on.

Then, there is the positive effect of the organic movement for all the future babies of the succeeding generations. Organic mattresses have significantly smaller carbon footprints. They are grown in conditions that do not pollute and harm the air, the soil, or the water. They are manufactured with little or no waste, compared to mass-produced cotton mattresses, which always have surplus in the factory runs. Cotton grown locally would also require less transportation resources like oil.

Will an Organic Mattress Provide Comfort to the Baby?

Natural cotton is softer and settles (becomes flat) much slower than synthetic cotton. A baby can sleep soundly and happily on top of an organic baby mattress. Without the smell of synthetic materials and chemicals, the baby will have less problem falling asleep. The natural filling of organic cotton can provide support to the baby's frame easily.

Mothers and the people taking care of the baby should still not forget to laundry and clean the mattresses regularly, to kill bacteria and other things. Make sure to use an organic detergent, because washing an organic material with cleansers full of artificial compounds will defeat the organic quality of the mattress, and therefore still expose the child to hazardous materials. Detergent substances have a higher tendency to stick and be absorbed by the skin. Make sure a washed mattress is aired and dried out completely.

Of course, an organic baby mattress should be used on an equally organic baby crib, which is manufactured with genuine solid wood, without glues or chemicals, and with a finish that is of low toxin levels. It can also help to feed the child with all-natural food and baby formula. Taking small steps to make a baby's environment very ideal will definitely go a long way. Organic baby mattresses can be part of the full grown adults' resolve to save the earth, and care for their babies as well. They mattresses can still look as stylish and attractive as synthetic baby mattresses. They can be covered or wrapped with natural wool, which is both beautiful and warm. A single organic baby mattress benefits not only the baby using it but the babies of the future - all of whom will enjoy a cleaner, toxin-free earth.

Canvas Tents Do Cover Nicely

When you're looking for a tent for your outdoor needs, consider the many benefits a canvas tent offers. These tents are suitable for different outdoor experiences, such as camping vacations, fishing trips, picnics, backyard parties and large outdoor functions. Canvas tents are very popular due to their versatility and durability.

Many tent retailers offer several different varieties of canvas tents. The Internet also is a great resource to help you find reputable canvas tent manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Whatever your specific needs, there is a canvas tent designed to meet them. Even if your requirements are truly unique, some tent makers can custom-build a canvas tent just for you.

Canvas tents go by different monikers. They are often referred to as hunting tents, wall tents, mountain-man tents or platform tents. While they may have different names, they have a common characteristic that sets them apart from tents made of other materials. Canvas is a heavy-duty, plain-woven fabric known for its sturdiness. That trait is what makes it so popular among outdoor enthusiasts who require reliable protection against the elements.

A good canvas tent has certain qualities. Some of these are:

* Great strength. Canvas can survive harsh conditions such as heavy rain and snow and forceful winds. Canvas tents are ideal in severe weather conditions. A quality canvas tent can last 20 to 30 years.

* Double-stitched seams. Seams of this type are stronger than single-stitched and are able to withstand more stress. They also are flatter against the canvas.

* Extra-tough material in strategic areas. Areas that receive more anchoring and stretching of fabric need this additional reinforcement.

* Quality appearance. A good canvas tent is visually appealing. A quality canvas tent does not sacrifice attractive, contemporary design just because the material is resilient.

Collecting Toys - Millions of Adults Still Love Toys

Collecting is definitely one of the most popular hobbies and there are almost as many different types of collectibles as there are collectors! Practically anything can become a collectable item, but one of the most commonly collected objects are actually toys. People of all ages seem to love toys, especially those toys from around the time that they themselves were children.

Collecting toys, for many, is more than just a fun hobby, it is an investment. A lot of the older toys are very rare, especially in the better conditions and/or with the original packaging. Naturally, the better condition a toy is in and whether or not it still has the original packaging heavily influences its value.

Collectors spend a lot of money to get certain toys to add to their collections. In 1988 the an auction was held at the Perlman Toy Museum in Philadelphia and over $5,000,000 in toys were sold in under 24 hours!

Often toy collections are handed down from one generation to the next. Sometimes the receiver of the toy collection loves and appreciates toys as much as the one who passed them down, while other heirs will sale the toys at auction. Some of the largest toy collection in the world were amassed by two or more generations of collectors.

Although collecting vintage toys can be a great investment there are many people who aren't concerned so much about the monetary value as they are the sentimental value. For many people collecting toys is a way to hold on to their youth and keep a bit of the fun alive in their lives. As an example a friend of mine has a huge collection of action figures, most of which he has had since he was a child. Now, even though he has long since "grown up", he continues to add more action figures to his collection. He says he wouldn't consider selling any of his older toys because of their sentimental value.

Action figures and Barbie Dolls are some of the most collected types of toys.

The Barbie Doll was created in 1959 and did not have bendable legs. An original 1959 Barbie Doll fetched nearly $26,000 at auction! While most Barbie Dolls wouldn't bring that much there are many of them that would sell for hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. Over the years there were a lot of Barbie clothing and accessories that were produced. Quite often this clothing and many of the accessories can actually be worth more than the Barbie Doll itself.

In 1964 executives of Hasbro decided to emulate the great success of the Barbie Doll with young boys. They introduced the GI Joe as the boys alternative to Barbie. For the first time boys began to "play" with dolls on a wide scale. It was OK though, the GI Joe was an action figure, not a doll.

In recent decades a new type of toy hit the scene and has now become quite a collectable. How many of you collect toys from restaurant kids meals such as McDonalds Happy Meal? A full set of a particular series can often bring double the price or even more than was paid for them and you got burgers, fries and a drink to boot! Once a series is discontinued it can become quite difficult to locate those missing from your collection, especially if you insist on "mint in bags". Serious collectors will often spend $5 to $10 for that one toy they need to complete a set. Of course some of the older "happy meal" toys from the 70s and 80s are worth much more than that.

Delicious Kid's Fast Food Delivery at Your Doorstep!

People all over the world like fast food. They are one of the most popular and fast moving food items, no matter in which part of the world you are. Even the children show their liking towards them and tend to develop a taste for them faster than you can imagine. Try talking about pizza to your kids and you would be pulling them out of their upset moods or tantrums. Pizza or burger, you name it and you have it all! Kids love fast food! You must have already tried these magic words as the easiest escape or bait for getting things done your way!

Moreover, you must have tried to make children sit at one place and eat a wholesome meal. It can be quite a daunting task. It takes all the efforts on your part to just make them sit and eat peacefully without dirtying the table cloth or throwing down the fork or the knife. Kids' fast food is just the right answer to make them eat like the way you want! All you need is to order some healthy fast food for kids so that you are also satisfied that they have eaten proper nutritious food. Fast food advertising is also mainly geared towards children which easily lures them. They just need any occasion or the pretext to take the next bite!

So next time you are about to order fast food, think about the toppings and the condiments. Kids fast food come with various toppings and variety. Lure your kids with the strawberry pizza, strawberry pizza, extra cheese pizza or a fruit pizza to suit their tastes. You can rely on hotels and restaurants to have talented and skilled chefs who know how to lure the little customers and keep them coming back. Its not only the garnishing and condiments but also the toys like Happy Meals at MacDonald's that are enough for the kids to keep coming back asking for more. All these are major source of attraction rather than the food itself. After all who can resist a free gift with your meal?

Kids' fast food has yet another remarkable feature that they can be ordered as per the kids eating capacity. Kids' pizzas are usually smaller than the usual adult pizzas. Same goes with burgers and French fries as well. You can get a smaller packet of French fries or a smaller coke. Such flexibility is not available with the traditional food ordered with main course at fancy restaurants.

In the end, packaging and delivery are also no less attractive. A happy meal box with smiling Ronald MacDonald is enough for the kids to take a friend home. He can also appear at their parties and have fun with them. Fast foods have become very attractive and kids are no less influenced by them, Moreover, vendors have also made enough reasons for the kids to be attracted to their fast food services. So think about kids fast food menu when you are about to order food online!

What to Feed a Diabetic Dog

If you have ever wondered "What do I feed a diabetic dog?" this article will cover the topics you are looking for. What to feed a diabetic dog is a very important point to learn on so that your dog will have a happy, enjoyable and productive life.

The food to feed a diabetic dog relates to the original problem of what caused the diabetes in the first place. The problem with diabetes is one of not being able to use the energy, called sugar or glucose that enters the bloodstream. This is caused by lack or total loss of insulin production by your dog's pancreas. Overeating combined with a lethargic lifestyle causes an obese dog and then contributes to the cause of diabetes in dogs.

What to feed a diabetic dog in this case is just as important as making sure they start becoming more active. Do not let the dog lay around after a meal. It is also a good idea to give the dog two or three smaller meals instead of only one or two larger meals.

The food to feed a diabetic dog should be one of significantly low sugar content. The juicy or moist packages of dog food should be closely examined for high sugar content if you can. These are usually a prime source of too much sugar for your dog. The dry dog foods are better than the packaged moist ones for a diabetic dog.

The diet of a dog that you want to keep lean, healthy and active is one that you would normally use to prevent diabetes. This means that high-protein, slow-digesting foods are good for your dog, as they will not "shock" the dog's body with a high dose of sugar all at one time. The food to feed a diabetic dog will be those that have a "slow burn" metabolically speaking.

A food not to feed to a diabetic dog is table scraps. If you do feed them from your own table, it is wise to avoid the spicy foods. A dog is not a person. Although feeding your dog "people food" may make you feel like you are including it as one of the family, the truth is that the fatty foods we eat can cause health problems for the dog. Commercial businesses have spent a lot of money creating a diet for your dog that is tailored to what it needs. Take advantage of their experience and your diabetic dog will have an easier life.

What to feed a diabetic dog should be seen in the light of the statistics. In the USA, as much as fifty percent of dogs are obese. This is a terrible statistic and can be improved easily by a simple lifestyle change for the dog. Keep in mind that as you would go ahead and eat less and exercise more if you had a weight problem, your dog is not going to be any different.

Some dog food companies make a special blend just for diabetic dogs. They have a high amount of dietary fiber, are low fat content and have none of what is called "simple sugars". Your diabetic dog's diet can be improved with these types of dry dog foods.
