Avoid These Dog Food Ingredients

Because artificial colors, preservatives and flavorings are used?

Flavor is added because most animals would not eat the finished product without some sort of cover for the terrible smell. These additional flavorings are usually rancid restaurant grease. The rancid grease is collected in barrels after sitting in the sun for weeks. This is what the pet foodmanufacturers buy to add as flavoring, which is sprayed onto the kibble. Also sugar or corn syrup is used to cover up the bad taste of the inferior kibble.

Different dyes are used to make the food look good to us, the pet owner. Dyes are known carcenogenic causing additives, and I'm quite certain my pet, or yours, does not care what color their food is.

Artificial preservatives are used to extend the shelf life of the dog food. The main ones to avoid are: BHA (butylated hydroxytolulene), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used in automotive antifreeze, and is suspected of causing red blood cell damage) and ethoxyquin. Poodles - One of the World's Smartest Breeds

Come with me as I take a look at the Wonderful World of Poodles.

History
Although the national breed of France, the Poodle actually originated in Germany where it was used as a water retriever. Many believe the name "Pudel" comes from the German word "pudel" which means "one who plays in water."

In fact, the famous "Poodle Clip" was created by hunters to help the breed swim faster and more efficiently. The clip was not created as a decorative element. It was created to protect certain vital organs and joints of the breed in cold water.

The term "French Poodle" comes from France's capitalization of the breed's intelligence, trainability and eagerness to perform. The French turned poodles into popular circus performers where they gained notoriety and became Louis XVI and Queen Anne's court favorites. They have long since been associated with royalty. Even America's President, Grover Cleveland, owned a poodle.

The Standard Poodle, the largest of the three recognized varieties, is the oldest of the breed. All of the poodle's ancestors were water dogs known for their swimming abilities.

Characteristics
The poodle is the only breed that comes in three AKC registered varieties. The three recognized types are the Standard Poodle, the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle. The Standard is the tallest, measuring over 15 inches. The Miniature is 15 inches or under, but a minimum of 10 inches. The Toy is under 10 inches.

The breed comes in a variety of solid colors, including white, black, apricot and gray.

The Poodle is an exceptionally intelligent dog that excels in obedience training. Its intelligence and ability to learn makes it one of the most popular breeds in the world. It is considered one of the easiest breeds to train. Also, its hypoallergenic coat makes it a favorite amongst owners. It does not shed, but does require grooming on a regular basis. The breed adapts well to any living conditions, making it an ideal pet for apartments. However, it is an active dog and does require daily exercise.

The Poodle carries itself proudly and has a very distinct air of dignity. The word "elegant" is most often used to describe the breed. The Poodle is known to be shy, but sharp at the same time. Poodles are reserved with strangers and unless trained at an early age, can bark excessively.

The Standard Poodle (Caniche, Barbone, Chien Canne)
The Standard Poodle is considered to be a large dog of high intelligence and trainability. Elegant, strong and good natured, it makes an excellent family dog. It has a thick, soft, curly coat that does not shed but requires daily grooming. The ears are wide and hang close to the head. The eyes are very dark and alert. The feet are compact and the breed has an effortless and delightful gait (like walking on air.)

The Standard Poodle is pleasant, happy and generally easy to maintain. It is a loyal companion but unlike the Miniature and Toy varieties of the breed, can be less sensitive to its surroundings and does not bond to one owner or one household as much. It is considered the calmer of the Poodle varieties. Standard Poodles are friendly and excellent with children and other dogs.

Height: 15 inches
Weight: 45-70 pounds
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

The Standard Poodle is inactive indoors and even a small yard is acceptable. However they do require daily walks. They are not overly demanding but their temperament is based on their living conditions.

This is a long lived breed but it is subject to certain genetic diseases like most dogs. Cataracts, skin conditions (from allergies to certain shampoos,) hip dysplasia, runny nose and ear infections are common. Also, the breed is subject to bloating, so only feed it two to three small meals a day instead of one or two large meals.

The Miniature Poodle (Caniche)
The Miniature Poodle is considered to be a medium dog of high intelligence and trainability. More cheerful and playful than the Standard variety of poodle, it has a thick, soft, curly coat that does not shed but requires daily grooming. The ears are wide and hang close to the head. The eyes are very dark and alert. The feet are compact and the breed has a spunky gait.

The Miniature Poodle is an amusing, often curious dog. It is a loyal companion that insists on being included in all of its owner's activities. It can learn tricks effortlessly. It is considered less calm than the Standard Poodle, but not as feisty as the Toy Poodle. Most Miniature Poodles love children and other dogs but they will exhibit jealous tendencies and can display sharp reactions. They can be over playful and must be trained early on that there is a limit to play time. Overall, they are friendly and make excellent pets.

Height: 11-15 inches
Weight: 15-17 pounds
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

The Miniature Poodle is a good dog for apartment life. They are active indoors but do fine without a yard.

The Toy Poodle (Caniche, Chien Canne, Tea Cup)
The Toy Poodle is considered to be a small dog of high intelligence and trainability. More sensitive than the Standard and Toy varieties, it is also considered the smartest of the three. It has a thick, soft, curly coat that does not shed but requires daily grooming. The ears are small and long and hang close to the head. The eyes are very dark and alert. The feet are compact and the breed has a perfect gait.

The Toy Poodle is sensitive but extremely intelligent. They are very responsive and alert. They can be a delight, but also demanding. They do not like strangers and are reserved around children and other dogs. They are known to snap if they are teased, surprised or mishandled.

They generally bond with one owner for life and they are extremely loyal to that individual and will defend them at all cost, despite their size. However, a true "lap dog," the Toy Poodle expects an equal amount of loyalty and love in return. They adapt better to one dog households and do not do well with small children. The Toy Poodle is considered the least calm of the three poodle varieties.

Height: up to 10 inches
Weight: 3-8 pounds
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

The Toy Poodle is a good dog for apartment life. They adapt very well to "city life." They require little indoor or outdoor activities but nonetheless, should be socialized with a daily walk. They are demanding dogs and can bark excessively if left alone for long periods of time.

Choosing Your Poodle
Never is it more essential to choose a responsible and well-respected breeder than when choosing a Poodle Puppy.

As you've already learned from reading this article, dogs come in many different colors, sizes and TEMPERAMENTS!

Poodles especially fall into this category. You can end up with a great pet or a nightmare. Fortunately, with a little bit of research and homework ahead of time, you'll minimize the risk of a difficult pet and maximize your chances of a truly wonderful new companion.

I recommend everyone get the definitive guide to choosing a dog breed. This book will help you make the right choice. It was written by Marcel Cobs, very well respected in the industry. A dog is a companion for life. Making sure you choose the right breed should be step one. When you buy a car, you do not buy the very first car, on the very first lot, on the nearest street, do you? You do a little research. Choosing a dog is no different and this is the ONLY guide I have ever recommended.

How to Choose the Right Dog for You! By Marcel Cobs
A practical guide to guarantee you and your new best friend enjoy a great life together. If you have any interest at all in getting a dog... if you want to find out what type of dog you should get to fit you and your family... or you just want to figure out whether you should get a dog or not... then this book was written just for you. Comes with eBook and professional mp3 audio recordings included!

You can email me and I'll provide you the link to get the book.

Once you've decided on the type of dog you are getting, I suggest you check your local shelter. There are thousands and thousands of dogs in need of good homes and yes, some are pure breed dogs. It's a misconception that only "mutts" can be found in shelters (by the way....some of the best dogs I've owned or simply known, were mutts!)

The name of your local shelter can always be found in your Yellow Pages or online. Or you can simply go to The Humane Society of the United States website. Call your local shelter and ask them to notify you if a specific type or breed of dog comes in. Many are more than happy to keep you on a notify list, but some are not.

Second, I recommend you contact breed rescue organizations. You can Google breed rescue organizations by simply typing in the name of the breed and then the words "rescue organizations." These organizations have dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to find homes for purebred dogs and yes, many times THEY DO have puppies.

Finally, if you have not found what you are looking for at a shelter or through a rescue organization, I recommend you find a reputable breeder in your area. How will you know if they are reputable? Do some research and do a little homework. Also, try to visit more than one. Don't just buy the first puppy you see. Here are some helpful hints:

General
Check the Better Business Bureau. It's amazing to me how many people forget to do this! It's free and it takes about two seconds. Do it!

Health
1. Do the puppies look clean and do they appear healthy? - Puppies should be bright eyed, active, playful and have an outward appearance of good health (good skin and coat, no unusual odor, clean ears, etc.)

2. Have the puppies been checked for worms? - The puppy should have been examined for worms and the breeder should present you with proof that it has received at least one vaccination before it goes home with you.

3. Have the parents been x-rayed for hip dysplasia? - This is a genetic disorder that many dogs are prone to. The breeder should know all about hereditary diseases and should breed healthy dogs with good temperaments.

Early Socialization
1. Are the puppies friendly? Do they seem happy to be around you? - Puppies should be outgoing, begging to be picked up, competing for attention, and love being held and played with. A very timid puppy might tug at your heartstrings but chances are it's not in good health.

2. Insist on seeing the mother. Is she friendly and attractive? - At 6 weeks old, the mother should no longer be overprotective of her puppies. Insist on seeing the father. How is he with visitors? DO NOT buy puppies whose parents do not have good temperaments.

3. How old are the puppies? - Puppies should not be removed from their litters before 6 weeks. They need to be around their littermates for at least 6 weeks. Seven or eight weeks are even better. However, there is a limit. A puppy that is kept with its littermates past the age of 10 weeks may have become too dependent on its mother.

4. Has the breeder begun to socialize the puppies? - You can tell if a breeder has given each puppy some individual attention, care, and training. Don't be shy. Ask the breeder about this! Ask him, "what have you done to begin socializing this puppy?"

The Breeder
1. Is the breeder experienced with the breed? - The breeder should be able to answer any questions about the breed and agree to help you with any problems. After all, this is why you are buying from a breeder and not a pet shop.

2. Has the breeder gone over both the good and bad characteristics of the breed? - Every breed has good points and bad. No breed can be considered "perfect." The breeder should be honest with you. Some of the best breeders I know refuse to sell certain breeds to families with small children or owners who live in apartments, etc. It seems harsh and unfair, but actually they are doing you and their puppies a favor. Don't fall for the hard sell. There is no reason you should be pressured in any way. If you feel like you are going through a hard sell, walk away.

3. Has the breeder suggested further obedience training? - Many responsible breeders make this a requirement for the sale. All dogs need training. Don't be put off by this. This means they have the best interest of the dog in mind.

4. Does the breeder offer any kind of "starter kit"? - The breeder should give you some materials to take home. The "kit" will probably include some dog food, instructions on the care and feeding of your pup, a list of necessary supplies to have at home, dog care books, and some information on Veterinarians and dog training schools.

5. How about the paperwork? Is it all in order? - You should receive a contract (signed by both you and the seller), and a pedigree. You should not have to pay extra for the pedigree.

Your Part In All This
1. Are you willing to make a long term commitment to this puppy? - When you purchase a puppy, you are making a very serious, long term commitment to the care, training and love of this dog. This animal will live for a dozen years or more and it is your responsibility to do everything possible to keep it well and happy for its entire life.

Hope you've enjoyed "Poodles: A Look At The World's Smartest Dog Breed."

Gifts for Your Mother

Sending gifts to your mum is a way to express your love for her. All mothers want to receive gifts from their children, especially on special occasions such as a birthday, Mother's Day or Christmas. Based on your mother's hobbies, you can choose the right gifts which will make her day!

I have seen many people buying their mums music or movie DVDs as gifts. I think that's a good idea if your mother is a music or movie lover. You should find out what kinds of music she likes and what kinds of movies will suit her age. If you know there're some plays or concerts your mum wants to attend, you can buy theatre or cinema tickets and go to see the show with her. Your mother will be very happy when she knows that you want to spend time with her.

Some mothers have the hobby of collecting things. If your mother has this hobby, why don't you help enlarge her collection? Mine likes to collect vases. She has a large vase collection of different sizes and various colours and has been collecting them for years. Therefore, I often seek out vases of a unique-design as gifts for my mother.

Books are also popular gifts. You can find out what your mother likes to read about and buy a book on that topic. Your mother will love it if you choose the right book because everyone has her own passion and wants to know more about it.

Most mothers like plants and flowers. This kind of gift is easy to find and inexpensive. Actually your mum will probably love any flowers or plants that you choose for her. However, make sure that she isn't allergic to any particular flower and that whatever you choose is not difficult to take care of.

Another idea is preparing a surprise party for your mum. You can ask other family members to help you with this. Cook some of her favourite dishes and make a cake with her name on it. I'm sure she will be overjoyed with this nice surprise!

Above are some ideas about gifts for your mother. However, if you cannot find anything suitable among them, I suggest a gift card which allows your mum to go to the local mall and buy whatever she likes.

Food As A Reward?

Two thirds of Americans are struggling with excess weight or obesity. If you are one of them, do you find yourself saying things like: "When I lose weight, I'll treat myself to new clothes" or "When I lose weight, I'll treat myself to a huge ice-cream sundae as a reward." Many years ago, when I was trying to lose weight, those thoughts raced through my mind. You can change those thoughts like I did.

Let us take the first comment, "When I lose weight, I'll treat myself to new clothes." It wasn't until I realized that I had to love and accept myself right where I was, that the weight began to melt off my body. I dressed myself to look great at the weight I was at the moment. The clothes fit. They were bright and attractive. I got compliments on how I looked even with those extra pounds. This helped boost my self-confidence and encouraged me to stay on track.

Let us look at the second comment, "When I lose weight, I'll treat myself to a huge ice-cream sundae as a reward." Are we really rewarding ourselves when we put sugar-laden foods into our body? Well no -- not if we want to keep the weight off. We need to get the sugar out for a whole host of health reasons including weight loss and maintenance. If we lose weight and then reward ourselves with treats, aren't we setting ourselves up for a yo-yo weight loss program where we lose then gain weight? Plus, sugar is addictive and eating it only makes it more desirable. I recommend you take sugar out of your diet at every opportunity. Sure, we may slip up at times and give in to its seductiveness but then get back on track. Find alternatives to sugar-laden foods.

My next point is very IMPORTANT. Do not use food as reward. I dislike it when teachers in schools use junk foods for reward. It is TEACHING bad habits. And when you learn about how harmful junk foods are to our bodies, you can see that it really is an awful gift -- well meaning, but misinformed. Find NON-FOOD rewards that are fun to do or make us feel happy. A toy, an inspirational quote on a bookmark or plaque, the gift of time or knowledge, a gift certificate to a museum or movie are just a few ideas. There are many options.

If you need to have some sort of food as a reward or as part of a celebration, make a healthy choice. Choose a big watermelon at a picnic. Bring a few bags of oranges or apples to school to celebrate your child's birthday. Make a beautiful cut-fruit tray. Make carrot or zucchini muffins. I make mine with almond flour. They are tasty and nutritious.

So, remember.... Make the best of your looks right now at whatever weight you are. Work on loving yourself as you are. Feed your body nourishing foods. Reward yourself and those you care about with thoughtful non-food gifts. Work to break the tie between food and reward. If you must have a food reward, make it healthy.

10 Tips to Ensure Your Children Are Having a Healthy Balanced Diet

Top 10 tips to make your kids eat more healthily

In today's modern times parents are finding it harder and harder to ensure that their children are eating healthy and get that balanced diet that they deserve. One of the most important things has to be the 5 a day motto, but trying to get children to eat 5 fruit and vegetables a day is a lot easier said than done. It is also hard to find ways of squeezing these vegetables into their meals without them knowing or being able to taste them. Recent surveys have shown that children in the 21st century are eating higher levels of salt, saturated fat and sugar than the government recommended guide lines recommend. All these factors need to be thought about deeply to ensure that your children are getting all the nutrients that they need to ensure that they have optimum development.

So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure children develop healthy eating habits?

o Eat with your children

Eating with your children is a great way to ensure that they are eating what you want them to eat, and children also learn by good example, so if you are also eating the things that you want your children to eat, this shows them that's ok and grown up to eat these certain foods.

A few key factors to remember and to help making tea time a more enjoyable time could be as simple as, setting your dining room tables and bring the family together round the table to talk about everyone's events of the day. By doing things like this you are encouraging a routine into your children's life and are also promoting home cooked meals to them which are usually more balanced set meal and this way you know exactly what they eating. All of these factors will influence better eating habits throughout your children's life.

o Make the food that you cook as fun as possible

Try and make the meals you cook fun, colorful as possible to encourage your children to want to eat your meals. Dull, bland boring meals don't look appetizing and therefore encourage people not to want to eat them. Try making your meals full of color and texture and this in turn will make your children more likely to want to eat the meals and most probably finish everything on their plate.

o How to insure your children are getting as many fruit and vegetables as possible

When cooking you evening meals consider trying to encounter at least two types of vegetables in your meals, and then for desert try to encounter adding fruit to your deserts. By doing this you are insuring that your children are eating at least 3 portions of fruit and vegetables per day meaning that your half way there. You can also try adding a piece of fruit to their lunchbox and if they eat that then that is four pieces per day that your children are having without even realizing it.

o Hide' fruit and vegetables if necessary

Blend it into soups, chop it finely into lasagna and Bolognese, make strawberry ice cream. One of the latest trends of taken over has been smoothies and this is a very efficient way to give your children fruits without them knowing, which will cause less conduct between you and your children. I would recommend making your own as then you know exactly what is in it.

o Encourage children to drink water or diluting juice between meals

This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration; this will also help keep them off those vicious fizzy drinks that contain lots of sugar. The more your kids eat healthily then the better the brains will function and in theory the more that they will learn and the more they will pick up in school.

o If you have a fussy eater in the household, don't give up hope

Children's tastes often change as they grow older, so as long as you are persistent you should be successful. Keep trying, but don't focus too much on the issue. Try serving the same foods in different forms - for example, people who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup, try and find ways to hide things in food, hat is the key.

o Include a portion of lean meat or another type of protein in every meal possible.

This will help keep children fuller for longer and will stop them from wanting snacks or other meals throughout the day. Red meat is very good for providing iron which is very important in a diet, especially young girls. It is a known fact that young girls will eat very little red meat off their own accord so try and do as much as possible to encourage this.

o Serve oily fish twice a week (but no more).

Omega oils are very important for keeping the mind and heart healthy, these oils can be found in various types of fish like salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils.

o Pack a healthy lunchbox.

When making packed lunches try your best and disguise fruit and vegetables in sandwich fillings, and provide a piece of fruit you know your child likes. You need to be careful as children can be very particular about fruit; the rule usually is if it's too messy and difficult to prepare then they just won't eat it. Try and keep the fruit in small proportions and easy to handle by little hands. Remember the more appetizing you make the food the more likely you are to get them to eat it.

o Make sure your children eat breakfast.

This is probably the most important tip out of all them to remember as breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you don't start your day with a nice balanced breakfast, you are more likely to have concentration lapses and be unfocused for the rest of the day.
It's important to influence this as early as possible as then hopefully you will employ the routine which will also spill over into your children's adult years. Research has also shown that adults who eat breakfast in the morning are less likely to be over weight than adults who skip breakfast.

Tip:

Making mealtime's fun

Try and keep meal times as fun as possible to try and keep your children interested in the food that you are feeding them. Get them used to listening to what you say and show good parental guidance so that they know what you say goes. If they figure out that they are able to twist your arm, this will cause great difficulties later on in life, so it is important to lay the groundwork as early as possible.

Insuring that your children are eating correctly at daycare

If your children attend nursery school then I would advise you that when you are choosing your nursery, or have already chosen your nursery I would advise you to ask the staff for a copy of the weekly menu to ensure your children are getting the correct nutrients when they are outside of your control. Most nurseries will be happy to provide you with this information and may also be found on their websites as well.

Once you know what your children have already eaten during the day you can then plan your evening meals around this information to ensure that they are getting all the correct vitamins and nutrients throughout their childhood. If you are currently searching for a new nursery for your child I would recommend Gruntys Nursery school as they provide wonderful activities and also a great nutritional menu.

Overweight Cat Health Problems - Secrets That Resolve Them

Overweight cat health problems are common, tragic and unnecessary. There is no such thing as an overweight cat (or any other animal) in the wild. This means all overweight cats and their associated health problems is a man-made condition.

Obesity puts a huge strain on internal organs and greatly upsets the natural functioning of your cat's systems.

Although there is more than one factor that contributes to this, diet is by far the most important trigger. And there are two main areas in the diet that leads to obesity.

The first area is the diet itself. Most cats are fed a processed, commercial cat food. You may think you are doing the best thing for your cat. But if you look at the (real, unlisted) ingredients of most of the commercial cat foods, you'll find a very high fat content.

You may not be very happy to hear this, but most commercial cat food manufacturers care far more about their profit than about the health of your cat. They spend far more on an attractive packet and alluring advertising, than they do on the quality of the food.

Cheap, unhealthy ingredients are the order of the day. And fat is one of the cheapest ingredients around. But has little nutritional value, certainly not in high proportions.

You can reduce or eliminate your overweight cat health problems by switching to a quality, home made, raw meat and bones diet.

It's not difficult, time consuming or expensive.

The second problem many cat people do is to leave food out all the time. Cats are not grazers, like horses. They are carnivores. They don't hunt all the time. Cats tend to rest after a successful hunt, and sleep for several hours.

Carnivores tend to have a lot of unsuccessful hunts. So your cat's digestive system is geared up to few meals rather than many. Two meals a day is perfectly adequate for all adult cats.

Too frequent meals also upsets your cat's digestive system, causing problems here.

Finicky Eater Helpline - Get Them Involved

We all want our kids to eat healthy foods. But let's face it. Most kids are finicky eaters. And as most of us parents have learned, usually the hard way is never underestimate their stubbornness and strong will. I'm sure we have all experienced the frustration in dealing with a child that just won't eat what's on her plate. It can quite easily get to a point where we have reached the end of our rope and lose it. You suddenly get the urge to call your parents and apologize for torturing them all those years when they were trying to feed you. I was such a fussy eater, that I remember getting my mother to a point where she resorted to force feeding me by having my older siblings hold me down! As you can imagine that didn't work. But I can certainly understand that level of frustration and being at a complete loss of not knowing what else to do.

I see it quite often with my friends' kids. They try and try but finally resort to junk food. "All she'll eat are Chicken Nuggets," or "Heck, I'll put M&M's on his pancakes if it gets him to eat the pancake." It is a quick fix and they soon wind up just eating the M&M's. Quite frankly, these tactics do not work and we end up just avoiding the problem. And unfortunately, the longer we do this, the harder it becomes to correct.

Since kids are so different, there is no one simple solution to the problem. You will need to have a different tactic for each child. You will soon realize that success here is short lived. Because what worked yesterday for a child may not prove successful today, your tactics will need to continually change.

We at Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids are here to help by providing approaches that have proven very effective. We have researched suggestions from the experts in both the psychology and medical world, and have surveyed countless parents on what has worked for them. Some may sound very familiar to you while others will be incredibly helpful and inspiring.

Suggestion: Get them Involved
Getting children involved in the kitchen is an excellent way to change the finicky eater. Kids will eagerly try something that they prepared themselves as well as take great pride in seeing others enjoying the food. To most children, the kitchen is a new and exciting place. They love to cook and getting their little hands into the flour, kneading the dough, pouring ingredients into bowls and of course, mixing, mixing, mixing. They eagerly wait for the food to come out of the oven and are so excited to taste what they have made. I have seen this work not only with new foods but also with those meals that they refused to try in the past. By helping to cook it with you, they gain a new curiosity to it, giving the food a fair chance.

Not only does getting your child involved in the kitchen help his fussiness but it also allows you and him to bond. These are the memories that your son or daughter will look back on with great fondness. Cooking together is also very educational as they practice their counting skills, learn how to measure things, learn about time and even chemistry without them ever noticing. Learning through experience and with context is always far more effective and lasting than traditional learning.

So, let's get started! Here are a few tips to ensure a successful and fun experience:

o Always have your child wash her hands with you before handling food

o Aprons, hats and other paraphernalia are always fun

o Give your child a title (i.e., Chef Holly, Baker Tim).

o Read the recipe together so she is aware of exactly what you're making and what's involved

o Have all ingredients measured out beforehand. This makes things much more organized and orderly. Your child will love helping you fill the measuring cups and spoons!

o Assign tasks: Mom or Dad does the cutting and child does the mixing, etc.

o Exhibit good hygiene and safety behavior so that your child can learn and follow suit.

o Give yourself extra time to prepare the meal so that you are not stressed

o Clean up as you go to avoid a huge pile of dishes

o Get excited with your child along the way

o Have Fun!!!

Angel's Dog Story

Name: Angel
Breed: Doberman
Sex: Spayed female
Age: 8 1/2 years

During the last week of June, owners of a dog named Angel had noticed that their dog seemed very lethargic and depressed. Prior to this behavior, they did observe her reluctance to eat the usual dog food. At the time, she was eating Merrick brand kibble with additional cooked meat added.

On June 28, 2007 the owners took the dog to a vet for a basic checkup to see if the doctors could shed any light on the Angel's condition. They did the customary checks along with blood work. According to her blood levels, she was diagnosed with kidney disease. Her thyroid was also higher than normal. At that time, the owners were advised that their dog needed to intake approximately 8 cups of liquids per day. In addition, she needed to be on a low protein diet. The owners were told that kidney disease was not detectable until there was at least 75% damage were done to the kidneys. The really bad news was that, no matter what the owners did, her diagnosis was basically a death sentence, which could predict Angel to live anywhere from a few weeks to 6 months.

For the next few days, the owners made sure that their dog did intake the proper amount of fluids. This included encouraging their dog to drink more along with adding water and broths to her food. The dog did not appear to be gaining any ground.

On July 3, the owners visited the vet again as they were not seeing any progress. They agreed to begin treating their dog's treatment more aggressively. This entailed giving her sub-Q fluids. After 2 days of trying this method, the owners still were not seeing any noticeable improvement.

The dog was taken back to the vet July 5. At that time, the vet recommended to flush the dog's kidneys intravenously. They kept her for two days of constant flushing. After another blood test, her levels had decreased a small amount. However, not nearly enough to justify the constant IV.

At this time, the owners were obviously discouraged and not happy with the diagnosis nor the treatment.

These events were what let the owners to seek help from me. Following my recommendations, the owners were detoxing Angel's system while adding acidophilus and a digestive enzyme to the dogs food. The owners utilized a diet of mainly meats with high quality proteins along with brown rice for bulk. Also, as a vitamin/mineral supplement - owners gave the dog a product called Sea Meal which is similar to a multi-vitamin.

Only July 14, the owner returned to the vet for another blood test. They wanted to see how her levels were moving. The owners were pleased to see that they are slowly returning to normal. At that time, the levels were a little above the high end of the normal numbers. Close enough to take much of the worry out of the situation.

The result to date have been nothing short of miraculous. The first sings of chance within 12 hours of the dog starting to holistic treatments. Within 48 hours, observed a drastic difference in her attitude and overall appearance. The dog has continued to improve ever since.

Some of the improvements were observed are definite increase in the dogs energy level. Her eyes are bright and clear again - rather than drab and dull. Her coat is becoming amazingly shiny and soft. Her body it self has altered. Where her tissues were once very hard- she has now lost close to 10 pounds and feels "normal". Although cannot say for sure, we do believe that she had toxins backed up into her tissues that had crystallized. As the detox was working, it apparently dissolved these toxins and removed them from her body. She is now behaving more like she did several years ago... very happy and puppy like.

Raise Your Child to Be a Leader Not a Follower

Your child's leadership skills begin at the family dinner table. In this day of working moms and fast food eating, sitting down together for dinner is sometimes neglected. However, it is often the foundation of family life and should become a treasured tradition.

The dining table functions like a corporate meeting, it is where the parents set the family agenda and model both the attitudes and traditional modes of behavior and decorum. They set the example of pleasing conversation, showing an interest in what the family is doing and experiencing, and see that everyone knows proper table manners.

When you child is very young, still in a high chair, meals may be quite chaotic. Messes are made, food may be thrown, and you may wonder if you will ever get through it.

So, the challenge is: keep your cool and your voice down. Many of us react to our child's gross behavior by shouting at them, and if I ever meet a parent who has never shouted at his child, I will submit his name to the Vatican for canonization! However, we need to set a goal for ourselves to keep control of our reactions. After all we are modeling leadership and if we are shouting and adding to the chaos we will find that this is what our kids are learning from us.

Consistent, firm correction works very well. Save the yelling for a dangerous situation which warrants the emotion. Never forget the fact that you, the parent are the leader of your family, the decision maker, and that your kids don't run the show.

Goals at the table change as your children age. The one goal that should apply throughout their lifetime is that the table is a place for tranquility, relaxation, but also a place for lively conversation. As this is the family gathering place, it can be used as a forum for discussion, the imparting of family values, the building of character, and the learning of ordinary day to day behaviors.

What can you do to set the tone for a gracious meal?

1. Have everyone wash his hands (and face too if needed) before coming to the table.

2. Instruct everyone to wait until every family member is present and then sit down together at the same time. You may want to have them stand behind their chairs till all are assembled.

3. Require proper dress at the table. No bare chests, underwear, or hats. Dressing in an appropriate manner is a sign of respect and is one of the building blocks of teaching your child to be respectful.

4. Begin to teach manners at a very early age. Please, thank you, and excuse me can be firmly in your child's vocabulary by the age of three.

5. Little by little your child will be learning the table etiquette which you model. He probably won't be able to handle his utensils very gracefully until around age 7 or 8, but you can suggest and quietly demonstrate what to do, and not get upset if he can't do it properly. His motor skills may not be developed to the level of your expectations, so just know that time and maturation will cure the problem.

6. Have a definite plan for teaching table manners, but keep it low key. There is nothing more disruptive to a happy meal than a parent fussing at a kid for every little thing they are doing incorrectly. To prevent this, decide that you will model a certain proper eating technique on a certain day of the week, or every other week. You might want to call this "MANNERS NIGHT" and everyone will know that they are going to have specific training on "manners night".

7. There is a very subtle way to correct an unacceptable behavior without having to actually confront and embarrass the wrong doer. This technique will work if you have more than two people at the table. Let's say that Jenny is sitting there running her hands through her hair and twisting it. If you have already taught Jenny to keep her hands in her lap when she is not using a utensil , all you need to do is ask someone else at the table, "Dad, would you please review for us what we do with our hands when we are not eating?" If Dad indicates that we keep our hands in our lap, Jenny's hand will probably be seen descending to her lap. If she doesn't hear Dad because she is daydreaming, a gentle but direct approach may be necessary. Again, we are modeling respect for the feeling of others. This indirect method of correction is very effective when several people are present and know the "rules".

8. Foster interesting conversation. Suggest that the children think of things and make a list of things they would like to talk about when you meet together at the table. If the family is sharing the fun of reading a book together you might even want to read aloud at the end of the meal for the length of a chapter. We tried this with James Hariots's "All Creature Great and Small", and the family not only enjoyed the book, but found much to think and talk about. Make the table a fun and interesting place to be.

10 Frugal Food Organization Tips - Part 1

This is my first set of tips in my series on food organization. These tips are things I have learned over the last 30 years of homemaking.

1-Take a few days to make up a master grocery list. As you think of things you buy, write them down. When you can't think of anything else, you can organize it any way you want (food categories, alphabetically). You can make copies of this and put one on the fridge. Just put a check mark by something when you find you need to buy it. You can take the list with you when grocery shopping and replace with a fresh one.

2-Make another list. This is your Master Meal List. You can do one for each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) if you want but I just do one for dinners. Try to get a month's worth of dinners down. I put these in seperate categories: beef, chicken, pasta, vegetarian, etc. This may take you a day or two to come up with too.

3-I go every other week to do my main grocery shopping. I look at my meal list and pick 2 week's worth of dinners and check off the ingredients I will need off my grocery list.

4-The alternate weeks, I'll go pick up just the few perishables or things we have run out of. Also if any new great sales come up that week, I'll pick up those items. Takes just a few minutes.

5-I check my grocery store circulars when making my lists and develop meal plans according to what is on sale. You can also look online to check your local circulars if you do not get the newspaper. Just do a google search.

6-It goes without saying to use coupons. I have saved as much as $70 on a $300 bill (that was for 2 households-mine & my parents for 2 weeks) with coupons. I will often use a coupon to try a different brand of something I use to see if I like it. It's great when you have a coupon for something already on sale. You can sometimes get things for free this way.

7-I always stock up on meat & freeze it when it's on sale. I'll do that with everything as long as it won't go to waste (perishables that can not be frozen).

8-Some people have set nights for set meals such as Monday-pasta night, Tuesday-beef roast night, etc. I do that for several days a week but the rest of the week is pretty flexible. I have a list I made when making my grocery list of the dinners we will have for the next 2 weeks. I just mark it off when I cook one. That way, there's no wondering what to have for dinner. My choices are on my list on the fridge.

9-This is probably common knowledge but don't go grocery shopping when hungry. I guarantee you will buy more impulse items if you do.

10-Also try not to take the kids with you. If you have no choice, give them jobs to do. Even toddlers can put things in the cart for you. Older kids can go fetch items for you. I'm one of those moms who would buy her kids a small toy or candy at the checkout. BUT it was understood, they only got it if they did their job well and did not beg me for everything through out the store. If they saw a special cereal or something they wanted while shopping, well then that was their prize instead of the toy or candy.

Throwing the Best Little Girl's Birthday Party

To a little girl, birthdays are a big deal. In fact, when I asked an 8-year-old friend of mine what her favorite holiday was, she replied, "My birthday." Making a young girl's birthday memorable is an important and fun responsibility for parents. The best part of throwing a party for girls under the age of twelve is that you can be creative without breaking the bank. There are all sorts of ways to cut costs when it comes to planning your little darling's birthday party. One of the best ways to throw a memorable and exciting party is to use a popular party theme the majority of little girls will get giddy about-one example is a "Pretty as a Princess Party."

The first thing that needs to be taken into account before throwing a "Pretty as a Princess Party" is the location. One of the best ways to keep costs low is to host the party in your home. However, renting a room at party place is always a great option too. When making invitations for this party, a clever idea is to create the invitations on the computer and print them in a fancy, calligraphy font. The wording could say something along these lines: "Dear Princess, The honor of your presence is requested at a special party to celebrate the birthday of your dear princess friend. Please come dressed in your finest princess apparel and be prepared to have a magical time and feel glamorous!" After the invitations are printed, roll the invitations from the outsides towards the middle. This will make the invitation resemble an old-fashioned, scroll-looking proclamation. Tie the scroll with a pretty ribbon and hand-deliver the invitations to each of your daughter's friends.

When it comes to the actual party planning, there are several activity ideas you could incorporate to have hours of fun-filled partying. If you have a friend, babysitter or daughter in her teenage years, ask her if she would be willing to spend an hour doing nails or hair for the young princesses. It is a known fact that little girls idolize teenage girls, so a smart idea would be to get a teenager you respect and would like to see your daughter emulate. It would be a kind gesture to offer the teenager payment for her time; $10 would be sufficient. Asking for permission from the other parents to paint their daughter's nails, style their hair or perhaps even do a little makeup is recommended, because some mothers may prefer their daughter not be "made-over." These teenage girls could even teach the little girls a lesson about how to fix their own hair or give themselves a manicure.

Another fun party idea is to split all the party attendees into groups of three or four and allow them to make homemade wedding gowns! Let the girls use toilet paper to wrap one member of each group and turn her into a TP bride. Girls can express their creativity by adding a bouquet or veil and tuck the toilet paper into the selected bride's hair clips, clothing or accessories. A glamorous party favor idea for each of the guests is to fill a gift baggie with a fake princess tiara, Mardi-Gras beads and a package of princess fruit snacks.

Your little princess deserves nothing but the best when it comes to the party for the most important holiday of the year-her birthday! Remember, the day may come when the little princess may want to have a party outside the walls of your home with her teenage friends, but for now, just celebrate that you can host a party and have happy, darling little girls celebrating your daughter and partying in a wholesome, delightful, princess way.

What Our Lives Are Really About

This year with the holidays, I had a sense of what is important in my life, and what were the stupid things that I was focusing on. I was totally stressed, and I did not know why. I finally figured it out! I am from the midwest. As you probably know, we were hit by a major blizzard for Christmas. The blizzard left people without electricity, without any way of leaving their homes, and for Farmers and Ranchers, no way to get to their livestock. Accidents happened. People were killed as a result of these accidents. Talk about stressful. It is hard to imagine how difficult living can be under these circumstances. It brought back memories of long ago snow storms that I had conveniently forgotten. The blizzard of '49 I was 8 years old.

I can't remember all of the details, but I do remember that all of my family went out to hand scoop through snow drifts to make a trail about a half mile long, so that we could move the cows to a hay stack, so that they would have food. It was necessary that we do that horribly hard work to keep the livestock alive because they did not deserve to go hungry and die. It was just something we had to do and we did it, even though it was physically very difficult and it was really cold. We worked with neighbors that sometimes we really didn't care for, so that with all of our efforts together, we could get to town for badly needed food.(only to discover that the grocery stores were totally out of food, as the supply trucks couldn't get to the stores to deliver supplies to the stores.

We had canned vegetables and meat, but we ran out of floor, salt, coffee and soap. But I don't recall that anybody was depressed or unhappy, because we realized that we were not alone. All of our neighbors were in the same situation. We just hoped that nobody got sick, or was injured, as there was a very slim chance that any body could get in to rescue us. Army planes flew over the blizzard area, and we were told if there was a real emergency, that we were to take coal ( which was the heat source for most of us) and write in big block letters S O S.

And then they would try to drop supplies to us. I remember that we were getting low enough on food supplies that my Mom was ready to cut open our toy bean bags to fix another meal for us, when they finally got our road opened so that we could get into to town for badly needed food. What dawned on me this Christmas was, that we were not concerned about presents or something new for the house.

We all worked together to have the basic necessities of life. We appreciated a meal, we wanted to take care of our animals, we were concerned about our neighbors, we grieved for their misfortunes! We didn't resent that we had to work really hard and in really bad conditions, we were all willing to do whatever it took, to take care of our neighbors, our livestock and our families. Maybe it is time for us to get back to those basics and quit worrying about keeping up with the Jone's and having all of the newest and latest of gadgets.

It is time for us to be grateful for the ability to take care of our families, our friends and our neighbors. It is time for us to appreciate how good it is to have our families, have a meal on the table (even if it is a very basic meal) and maybe we just need to be happy that we are alive and have the capabilities of surviving even the most major crisis! Maybe, we should take the time to reexamine our lives and decide what is really important and what is just stupid wants and wishes!

Quick Tips For Handling Child Anger - It's About Sharing

One day our toddlers are perfectly happy and it seems that overnight they are suddenly very angry little people who don't want to share anything. Dealing with child anger is often a challenge for most parents. Some think that the behavior is cute while other parents decide that the issue must be addressed immediately. Following a few tips to address the issue of sharing that will teach your child about making choices will help your youngster and give them some solid skills when they become adults.

Sharing is a difficult concept for children. This is especially true when the youngster has not been around other children, siblings, or ever really had a connection with their toys. Usually when a youngster is around two years old, they will begin to identify items as "mine!" This is the time when you will be faced with the challenge of teaching sharing skills. The response of many parents when a child will not share is to say "No!" While it is effective, you are not teaching your child anything, except that somebody bigger than they are can make them do things they don't want to do.

Most children who get this response from parents learn to develop skills to hide their feelings when they are mad. Many adults who do not deal with anger appropriately did not learn the skills to effectively deal with issues when they were toddlers. When they are in a stressful situation, most people will automatically revert to what they learned as young children. If they have grown into large adults, they may bully people when they are in difficult situations, if they are small, they may show passive aggressive tendencies in reaction to stressful situations.

Sharing issues are a great time for parents to teach their children about choices and problem solving. It only takes a moment and a slight change in the use of the "No!" word. Children who don't want to share often start with a swipe at the offender. They don't really want to hurt or hit the other person; they only want to make them leave their toy alone.

Most parents go on high alert when a swipe occurs. They will grab the toy and say, "No hitting!" Hitting had not really occurred to the youngster until it was mentioned, but it will be a good idea for next time. Remember that children are sponges and think very literally. If you make the suggestion that hitting is a response, then next time hitting will be the action that will be taken. Teaching choices will take the same amount of time and have the kind of long term results that will benefit the youngster much better in adulthood.

You don't have to have a discussion, or react in any way, just identify the issue. "You don't want to share." This is not a question - it is an observation. Many parents make the mistake of turning statements into questions. This can be very confusing to a child and opens the door for a response that you don't want.

After you have identified the issue give your youngster a choice, "Do you want to share this toy or that toy." This is also not a question. You are giving your youngster a choice. When you first use this technique, your child may attempt to select a third toy or open toddler dialogue. But, you must stick with the two toys, "this toy or that toy." When your youngster gets used to this technique, they will begin to choose two toys before they begin playing. This is the foundation of problem solving that will help your young adult make decisions about sharing information, skills, and problem solve effectively.

The longer that a parent puts off teaching their child effective problem solving skills and sharing strategies, the more difficulty the child will have as they get older and are required to share more and more parts of their lives. By dealing effectively with child anger and teaching positive skills, you are giving you child great tools for sharing and dealing with situations that require problem solving in later life.
